Re: Cheri, Winston, Deborah, Martha, Kathy... html/website unit

Hi Winston; ===== This is probably a no-brainer, but how much material should one have on their site before they open it to the public? This is one area, that you haven't covered to date and I was just wondering if it makes any difference. ===== Well -- there's a difference between "go live on the Internet" and "promote like crazy." For the "go live on the Internet" -- do that as soon as you have a shell of a site. A few pages is fine. And don't use the words "coming soon" or "under construction" anywhere. See, Google uses an 'aging' filter. This is the filter responsible for most of my grey hair. it's aging me. lol. Kidding. But seriously, the 'aging' filter reads how long a site has been live online. Brand new sites don't rank as well until they've been online a while. there's a long explanation of how it works in the "Google Sandbox" chapter of my SEO fast track book.... and how to minimize the effect. But, if you have a few pages ready, put them up. You will instinctively know when you're ready to start actively promoting. You'll be able to look at the site and know that there's enough to grab the interest and attention of your target market. Or, even if you have a compelling description for your newsletter, you can start promoting the newsletter in the ezine directories. Oh crud... that's the next book that I haven't gotten edited yet. lol. It's written, just not edited. : ) Linda

===== You could always move close to the north pole. You know, six months Day and six months Night! ===== That's one place I would NOT want to pull an all-nighter. LOL L

Hi Cheri; ===== I finally got going and just wanted to say that you make it easy, Linda. Who knew? ===== lol. I'm so glad. I'm getting that reaction from everyone that tests it, and that's feeling pretty gosh darn good. heh ===== On the other hand, I can tell from your exchanges with Winston that there's a whole lot more that I probably don't even want to know, lol. Just the basics for me! ===== lol again. That's why I kept the first book to the basics. Just enough to make a simple site or add content. I'll be doing an advanced one later, with more CSS, javascripts, etc -- but (like all things) first walk, then run. I'm really glad you found it easy to follow. Thanks!! : ) Linda

Winston, Thanks but no thanks. I HATE cold. I don't even like it when we turn on the air conditioner...my feet freeze. I'm the only person in Utah who wears socks all summer, lol. I think we all had this conversation about a month ago and I got some great tips from everyone about task management, which has helped. Unfortunately, a good hard look at what I was doing revealed that this internet activity was not the top priority for me right now, much as I love it. Go figure. Tell you what, though. It has been most valuable to learn. I'm planning a marketing campaign to recruit agents, and getting a website up to help with that is one of my top priorities. Fortunately for me (but not for Linda--sorry, Linda), my partners have a web designer on board, so the cost will be minimal. He can do the coding, and I'll implement all of Linda's teaching to make things work. :-) So now I need to get a proposal down on paper for my partners' consideration. See you guys later. Cheri

Linda, I'm so excited! Thanks for the basic website shell that you sent with the course. I was able to use it to cobble together a crude but functional demo for my partners to show them what I want to do with a recruiting site. Didn't add many pictures, left the background white, etc. Just set up the home page and three links to sub-pages for the demo with some sample content. Took about an hour, thanks to the framework being there already. Now I feel competent to work with the web designer who's on the payroll. Cheri
