The late 1860s were prolific years for Alexei Savrasov, and while during this period he produced works of rare beauty, his painting, as a general rule, turned increasingly somber. An anticipation of darker times to come?

As said in the previous post, while the works of these years are an epitome of beauty (particularly evidenced here by the painting at the bottom), they nevertheless manifest a somber propensity in Savrasov's production.

As commented previously, after Savrasov first daughter was stillborn in 1871 his paintings became increasingly pessimistic, featuring landscapes whose majestic beauty does not suffice to dispel the frigid impression they provoke.

At the same time, however, the lyricism of a particularly beautiful scenery would work the magic and the resulting masterpiece would make forget any other consideration.
