When you are contacting a person using PM for the first time you don't know if the person doesn't want to be contacted or not. So if you want to make sure that they are not feeling offended, your first contact could be asking them if they would be interested in receiving certain info from you.

This is usually practice which is required in some countries by law.

If you are contacting a person to inform them about some activity in community or just to get in touch with them, there is little chances that such person would be feeling receiving unsolicited messages from you. They are here so they should expect to be engaged in some way in activity here.

In addition users have tools which allow them to block intruding person from further communication. They have option to hide their profile entirely from anybody here and they have option to block notifications from certain users or for certain features or disable all notifications entirely.

I DON'T SEE THE LONG TIME MEMBERS DOING THIS. it the people who are posting their business ads 25 times a day. people that dopn't seem to use Adland for the fun, community and social.

i would like to see people self nominating themselves for POTW. would not bother me at all.
