"Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us." This is part of the Prayer, our Lord taught us.
Forgiving is difficult especially when the hurt is too deep. Given time, we will learn to forgive. Forgiveness is not complete until we reconcile with the persons involved. I say "I forgive you", but I do not talk to you anymore. If that is the situation, then I have not actually forgiven.
As Kathleen said, I had similar situation, my Ex partner dumping me for another woman. The hurt was so intense, that anger took control of me. I could not forgive him, I could not be nice to him even if he wanted to be friends with me. Instead I tried to be nasty with him in my words.
The anger grew in me day by day, I realized I was ruining my mental health. I sought Bible for my guidance. The passage which helped me was this.
"But I tell you, you who hear me, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, and pray for those who mistreat you."
My situation was - I could not be nice to him, I did not even want to talk to him. But Jesus is telling you, "bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you". So, what did I do? I couldn't be nice to him. But I started praying for his happiness..knowing that God will take care of the rest. Slowly we became friends again.. Now, he and his new wife both are my friends.
