Latest update on Stephen Vanslette
Larry,
Well, they finally got the surgery over with on Stephen's jaw. Only one problem, they couldn't remove the neck collar on his neck to do the surgery right, so they improvised. They didn't do the plates like they intended, so they just placed the jaw the best they could and wired his jaws shut. He will be like this for three weeks, which, because he cannot move the jaws at the "growthplate" where their broken as well, they may grow into place and he won't be able to open his mouth very much.
Also, last night, the doctor who did the ct scan said Stephen may have suffered a minor stroke because he has blood pools in the left part of his brain, which is probably why he doesn't move his right side much.
He did wake up yesterday and nodded when I asked him a question, then he squeezed my hand and wouldn't let go.
He is more aware every day, and now that the jaw surgery has been done, they are going to start "weening" him from the drugs and the ventilator. It will be three weeks before the wires are gone from his mouth and the trach is removed. Then they will remove the feeding tube.
All in all, it is going ok., I guess.
We still don't know the extent of the damage, but at least I know he understands me and knows who I am. That's a start.
They also put casts on his legs today. Right one is a full leg cast, the left is only to his knee, but the upper one has plates holding it together, and didn't need it.
That's about it for now. I'll still keep you updated.
Your friend,
Lola
