Hello everyone,
I have just sat back and read all these posts with a smile. Quite a discussion.
I am very slow to speak as so often I have found myself with my foot in my mouth. Being misunderstood is the norm for me. I think I am being so clear and then am so surprised at what others understood me to say. :)
As for accents, my speach patterns are very messed up: Born in La, living in Tx for several years, then 30 years in Alaska, and now 18 years in Alabama.
My husbands first Real Estate Broker told him to never lose his Alabama Southern Accent as it made him sound just dumb enough to be believed and trusted. As a world traveler, he has lost some of his southern accent.
Being in business, we have found it a very safe policy to keep politics and religion out of the conversation as much as possible.
In business situations, we have often had people introduce themselves as good old Christian people and then lie, cheat and try to steal from us. The ones that are truly Christian or spirtual let their actions show it by being kind, honest, and trustworthy.
As for Canadians and US Americans, we have traveled through Canada many times and love the Country and the people. I have always felt a kindred spirit with them. However, you know it is a different country, when you check in at the borders, either side.
As a whole, I find communication difficult at best. It is great when you can find someone to converse with who understands you or at least attempts to understand.
