Yes Roger, you may of course come and "steal" the self portrait for your forum, lol.

Otherwise I am very happy that your opinion about Goya's art has changed. He was indeed a great artist. I used to dislike him too - not a lot but maybe a bit, and more recently I believe I have found the cause: he painted a whole series of works dedicated to bull-fighting in his time... and I abhor it. In fact, if I had realized why it was earlier, I might have not started this thread at all...

Fortunately it was not the case.

Hugs,

Miguel

What a great painting.

This really puts a face to the name.

There is so much that can be learned by looking at self portraits.

I may come and steal this image for my forum.

Thank you Miguel, I have found many Goya paintings here that I was unaware of. You have changed my opinion a lot.

Goya's remains are unearthed at the request of the Spanish government, and moved to a grave beneath the floor of the church of San Antonio de la Florida in Madrid, Spain. When his body was disinterred from France, the skull was found to be missing, and has not been located since.

Goya may have made a career among the rich and the powerful of his time - including the royal family and the nobility - but like other celebrated masters of painting in history, he also was interested in common people. His genius is visible in this awesome portrait of a humble worker in her natural milieu: the street.

This other portrait of a humble individual at work incorporates a significant characteristic: an impressionist approach which far from diminishing its value, makes it greater through an almost
draft-like realization
.

These two have a powerful feeling.

The composition obviously well thought out and as you say, almost impressionistic.

Born in Barcelona in 1775, Antonia Zarate was a renowned actress who performed with her sister Maria in Madrid. The sisters belonged to a family of actors and artists, as did the sitter's husband, Bernardo Gil, a singer and comic actor in the Teatro del Principe. Their son, Antonio Gil y Zarate, became a celebrated poet and playwright. Valentin Carderera notes that Antonio owned two portraits of his mother by Goya: "Goya painted Dona Antonia Zarate ... twice, once in 1810 and again in 1811, both are in the possession of her son."

(1) The other portrait of Antonia Zarate is probably the one posted in page 8 of this thread.
