Painted in 1805, this precious masterpiece by Goya is virtually unknown at present - at least among the general public, and by comparison with other portraits of similar date.

By contrast, this other master work of Goya is immensely famous - probably only second to his The Nude Maja of 1799 - 1800.

This is another master work by Goya that while actually not too famous, has most deservedly been acclaimed as one of his best ever among the learned public.

What a great painting.

This really puts a face to the name.

There is so much that can be learned by looking at self portraits.

I may come and steal this image for my forum.

Thank you Miguel, I have found many Goya paintings here that I was unaware of. You have changed my opinion a lot.

Goya's remains are unearthed at the request of the Spanish government, and moved to a grave beneath the floor of the church of San Antonio de la Florida in Madrid, Spain. When his body was disinterred from France, the skull was found to be missing, and has not been located since.
