I will certainly take a good look around bookshops to see if any books throw light upon the problem of time spent in the wilderness by W. Turner.

An artist can be viewed like a photographer, they capture on the canvas a snapshot of what they see.

Both are very artistic in their own way.

Thanks for sharing.

That would be most appreciated, Roger. It may seem exaggerated, but this has become a source of worry for me or at least, of great curiosity.

It is just as you say, Bob. There was a time when the purist would deride photography, but fortunately that's not the case any longer.

Thanks for your kind contribution,

Miguel

"The Slave Ship"
(formally "Slavers Throwing overboard the Dead and Dying—Typhoon coming on") was
first exhibited in 1840. William Turner was inspired to create the below painting, and to choose to coincide its exhibition with a meeting of the British Anti Slavery Society, after reading The History and Abolition of the Slave Trade by Thomas Clarkson. Placed next to the painting were lines from Turner’s own untitled poem on the matter, written in 1812, that you can read at the bottom of this post. Both the painting and the verses must have caused a strong impression on Prince Albert, who was a speaker at the meeting, and the other people attending it.

William Turner - The Slave Ship (oil on canvas, first exhibited 1840)
______
"Aloft all hands, strike the top-masts and belay;
Yon angry setting sun and fierce-edged clouds
Declare the Typhon's coming.
Before it sweeps your decks, throw overboard
The dead and dying - ne'er heed their chains
Hope, Hope, fallacious Hope!
Where is thy market now?"
