Re: Strange Money #5: Network Marketing Q/A

Hi Winston, Pardon the wording. I actually didn't mean to separate Multi-Level Marketing from Network Marketing. I think Network Marketing is a newer terminology. Someone more knowledgeable should comment here. Help!

Winston, The terms are mutually interchangeable. Multi-Level-Marketing tends to focus on the structure of the matrix itself. Network Marketing tends to focus on the people aspect. Hence, the term "Networking" which you will see in the LHS panel of this AdlandPro site. I have always regarded them as the same thing. Depends which side of the black stump you were born on, I guess. Gary Simpson

Thanks Gary, I didn't mean to mis-lead the group. My earlier post was directed at the sales/distribution method of a business. I'm waiting for Linda to straighten me out here. :-)

No worries Jack, It was actually good that the distinction was made. I have always found that whenever one has the need to ask a question then many others are wondering about it but don't have the confidence or courage to ask for fear of being made to look foolish. As Linda would agree (I know coz she has stated it elsewhere and in private), there ain't nothing stupid about asking a question. Though, she put it somewhat more eloquently than that. Now it is in the open. MLM = NM Questions are encouraged. Come one and all. Gary Simpson

=========================================== I'm waiting for Linda to straighten me out here. =========================================== LOL Jack. Actually, you're quite right in the post where you say "network marketing" is a newer term. It is. MLM and Network Marketing mean the same. Initially, that style of selling (business model) was known as MLM. At some point, people in MLM industries/businesses realized they had an image problem because of difficulties in making a clear distinction between legitimate MLM and illegal "pyramid schemes" or Ponzi schemes. Many people "heard" MLM and thought "ponzi" or "scam" and didn't want to get involved. So they started calling it network marketing. Which is funny, really - because all you have to do is look around at Adland and you'll see VAST numbers of people saying "I'm in network marketing" when what they're really "in" is a ponzi or pyramid. LOL. So adopting a new name didn't work. A rose by any other name... : ) Linda
