Actually, you're quite right in the post where you say "network marketing" is a newer term. It is.
MLM and Network Marketing mean the same. Initially, that style of selling (business model) was known as MLM.
At some point, people in MLM industries/businesses realized they had an image problem because of difficulties in making a clear distinction between legitimate MLM and illegal "pyramid schemes" or Ponzi schemes.
Many people "heard" MLM and thought "ponzi" or "scam" and didn't want to get involved. So they started calling it network marketing.
Which is funny, really - because all you have to do is look around at Adland and you'll see VAST numbers of people saying "I'm in network marketing" when what they're really "in" is a ponzi or pyramid. LOL. So adopting a new name didn't work.
A rose by any other name...
