Hello Friends,

This morning I was listening to two of my favorite female vocalists. I just posted a series of videos with Barbara Streisand in Evelyn's Koffee Klatch thread. You can watch them here.

Another one of my favorites is Ofra Haza. She was called the Israeli nightingale. Her voice was superb and experts say she was tone perfect. She became world famous and sang all over the world. Unfortunately she died at a young age and we all lost a superb talent.

The first video is Jerusalem Of Gold written by Naomi Shemer who was considered to be Israel's national poet, songwriter and composer (she too passed away around 2 years ago). After the 6 Day War she added to the song when all of Jerusalem was reunited.

I hope you enjoy the videos as much as I do.

Shalom,

Peter

Yerushalayim Shel Zahav (Jerusalem Of Gold) is a popular Israeli song written by Naomi Shemer in 1967. The original song described the Jewish people's 2000-year longing to return to Jerusalem; Shemer added a final verse after the Six-Day War to celebrate Jerusalem's unification under Israeli control.
Naomi Shemer wrote the original song for the Israeli Music Festival on May 15, 1967, the night after Israel's nineteenth Independence Day. At that time, the Old City was under Jordanian rule; Jews had been barred from entering, and many holy sites had been desecrated. Only three weeks after the song was published, the Six-Day War broke out. The song was the battle cry and morale booster of the Israeli troops. Shemer even sang it for them before the war and festival, making them among the first in the world to hear it. On June 7, the Israel Defense Forces captured the eastern part of Jerusalem and the Old City from the Jordanians. When Shemer heard the paratroopers singing "Yerushalayim Shel Zahav" at the Western Wall, she wrote a final verse, reversing the phrases of lamentation found in the second verse. The line about shofars sounding from the Temple Mount is a reference to an event that actually took place on June 7.

The mountain air is clear as wine
And the scent of pines
Is carried on the breeze of twilight
With the sound of bells.

And in the slumber of tree and stone
Captured in her dream
The city that sits solitary
And in its midst is a wall.

Jerusalem of gold
And of bronze, and of light
Behold I am a violin for all your songs.
Jerusalem of gold
And of bronze, and of light
Behold I am a violin for all your songs.

We have returned to the cisterns
To the market and to the market-place
A ram's horn calls out on the Temple Mount
In the Old City.

And in the caves in the mountain
Thousands of suns shine -
We will once again descend to the Dead Sea
By way of Jericho!

Jerusalem of gold
And of bronze, and of light
Behold I am a violin for all your songs.
Jerusalem of gold
And of bronze, and of light
Behold I am a violin for all your songs.

But as I come to sing to you today,
And to adorn crowns to you
I am the smallest of the youngest of your children
And of the last poet.

For your name scorches the lips
Like the kiss of a seraph
If I forget thee, Jerusalem,
Which is all gold...

Jerusalem of gold
And of bronze, and of light
Behold I am a violin for all your songs.
Jerusalem of gold
And of bronze, and of light
Behold I am a violin for all your songs.

Words/Music: Naomi Shemer

Hello Friends,

For some unknown reason no notifications were sent out to AdlandPro members about the POTY winners thread.

You can go here to congratulate Mary Evelyn Simpson on her well deserved POTY win.

Shalom,

Peter

Hello Peter, here is a little something I just received in my email......
*************
In 1887 Alexander Tyler, a Scottish history professor at the University of Edinburgh ,had this to say about the fall of the Athenian Republic some 2,000 years prior:

"A democracy is always temporary in nature; it simply cannot exist as a permanent form of government.
A democracy will continue to exist up until the time that voters discover that they can vote themselves generous gifts from the public treasury.
From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates who promise the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that every democracy will finally collapse over loose fiscal policy, (which is) always followed by a dictatorship."

"The average age of the world's greatest civilizations from the beginning of history, hasbeen about 200 years.
During those 200 years, these nations always progressed through the following sequence:

From bondage to spiritual faith;
From spiritual faith to great courage;
From courage to liberty;
From liberty to abundance;
From abundance to complacency;
From complacency to apathy;
From apathy to dependence;
From dependence back into bondage."
The Obituary follows:

Born 1776, Died 2012
It doesn't hurt to read this several times.

Professor Joseph Olson of Hamline University School of Law in St. Paul , Minnesota ,points out some interesting facts concerning the last Presidential election:

Number of States won by: Obama: 19 McCain: 29
Square miles of land won by: Obama: 580,000 McCain: 2,427,000
Population of counties won by: Obama: 127 million McCain: 143 million
Murder rate per 100,000 residents in counties won by: Obama: 13.2 McCain: 2.1

Professor Olson adds: "In aggregate, the map of the territory McCain won was
mostly the land owned by the taxpaying citizens of the country.

Obama territory mostly encompassed those citizens living in low income
tenements and living off various forms of government welfare..."

Olson believes the United States is now somewhere between the
"complacency and apathy" phase of Professor Tyler's definition of democracy,
with some forty percent of the nation's population already having reached
the "governmental dependency" phase.

If Congress grants amnesty and citizenship to twenty million criminal
invaders called illegal's - and they vote - then we can say goodbye to the
USA in fewer than five years.

If you are in favor of this, then by all means, delete this message.

If you are not, then pass this along to help everyone realize just how much is at
stake, knowing that apathy is the greatest danger to our freedom..

This is truly scary!
Of course we are not a democracy, we are a Constitutional Republic .
Someone should point this out to Obama.
Of course we know he and too many others pay little attention to The Constitution.
There couldn't be more at stake than on Nov 2012.

If you are as concerned as I am please pass this along.
God Bless Everyone

Hi Gaby,

Thanks for the great article. This is not a joke and I of course agree with it. It really belongs in the President That Hates His Country thread and I'll post it there too.

Shalom and thanks again,

Peter

Hi All,

I got this today and burst out in laughter. What a pleasure it is not to be politically correct. I wonder if the title should be "Gay Goat With Bad Taste In Lovers" or do any of you have any other suggestions? :)

Shalom,

Peter
