From history of the arms of Moscow
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Custom to place on press and coins a portrait of prince, and also the image sacred as which prince considered as the patron, has been apprehended in Russia from Byzantium in end X of a century. On златниках (gold coins) the Kiev prince Vladimir Svyatoslavich christened Russia, on a face sheet of a coin - a portrait of prince and an inscription: " Vladimir on a table and се its gold ", and on the back Jesus Christ's image. In the beginning of XI century on coins and press of son Vladimir Svyatoslavicha Jaroslav Mudrogo (reigned with 1016 for 1054), Accepted a name Jury (George), for the first time appears sacred George's image. Jaroslav Mudryj promoted distribution and the statement of a cult of sacred George in Russia much. In honour of the sacred patron it has based in 1030 the city of Yurev (now - Tartu) and has put in pawn the same year Юрьев a monastery in Novgorod, later there has been constructed георгиевский a cathedral. In 1037 Jaroslav begins construction георгиевского of a monastery in Kiev and erects in it sacred George's temple, and day of consecration of a temple establishes an annual holiday - " Юрьевым in the afternoon ". The founder of Moscow - Jury Dolgoruky has continued this tradition, having put in pawn in 1152 city юрьев-Polish where in 1230-34 has been constructed well-known георгиевский a cathedral. In the same 1152 it builds on a new princely court yard in Vladimir George's church. On its press too sacred, costing in all growth and taking out sword from ножен.

The order of mayor of Moscow " About restoration of the historical arms of Moscow " on November, 23rd, 1993 to capital had been returned its ancient arms. In regulations about the arms it is told: " On a dark red board (the attitude of width to height 8:9) George Pobedonosets developed to the right in a silver armour and azure приволоке (cloaks) on the silver horse, amazing with a gold spear black змия ". So, again on the arms sacred George.

Many authors tried to explain sacred George's extraordinary popularity both in people, and among princely combatants transferring of features of Russian pagan gods on this sacred. On the one hand, George's meaning the name " cultivating the ground ", did by its patron of agriculture and cattle breeding, successor Velesa, Семаргла, Дажьбога. It was promoted also by days of memory sacred. Spring - on April, 23rd - has coincided with the beginning of field works with which in Russia many ancient pagan rites have been connected, and autumn - on November, 24th - well-known " Юрьев day " when peasants had the right to pass from one feudal lord-land owner to another. On the other hand, as the soldier and победоносец, it was the patron of prince and its team as on George cult Перуна - the main god of a pagan pantheon of prince Vladimir has been transferred. Besides the image of George in the form of fine young men - the soldier, the liberator and the defender, involved in itself sympathies of all people.
So who is represented on the arms of Moscow? By official documents, this question still finally is not solved. In " Regulations about the arms of Moscow " it is named by "George Pobedonosec", and in position " About the State Emblem of the Russian Federation ", approved by the president on November, 30th, 1993, is told: " on a breast of an eagle - the horseman amazing with a spear of a dragon ".
We believe, that how named an emblem on the arms of Moscow, it remains in the collective image which has personified all our past is and sacred, the patron of our princes and tsars, and prince or tsar in image змееборца, and simply soldier - the defender of Fatherland, and the main thing is an ancient symbol of a victory of Light above Darkness and Goods above the Harm.
