Hi Terry,
I don't know if you were here at the start of this forum, but I shared with Jim the happy "coincidence" that the week prior I had begun Bible study with a lovely couple who are a part of the missionary effort here in New Orleans.
They have left their homes and comfort and families and businesses in answer to Jehovah's call to witness to those in need. They have worked side by side with people who only have gutted walls to call "their" property. That is not a feeling that you can "imagine". Then, they go out in this killer heat in a van-into a city where the muder rate will have topped 200 for the year by the time you read this. Some days its' seven murders this weekend, when you start your week.
There is probably no place in as much need as we are at this time in history.
As my friends know about me-I lean to the dramatic and tend to "act out" what ever my passion du jour might happen to be.
When they first arrived at my back door, which was a first act of courage, in my opinion as it is a very long walk from the back to the front of a house in a very racially volatile city with nothing to protect you from what or who you could find back there other than your faith in Jehovah and your beleif that this is what He has asked you to do.
The axiom that says "when the student is ready, the teacher will appear" was very evident as they arrived in 90 degree heat with humidy at least that, sweating, red face-I worried one might pass out.
They were from Vermont and Ohio and this could not have been physically easy for them to do.
They came at the exact moment where I was dripping as much sweat off my forehead as I had in the sink washing dishes and I was too happy to take a break and offer them a cold bottle of water.
When they offered to come study with me, it was right on time for that too.
I thought I knew it all as I have been "studying" some kind of religious or spiritual way of life for my entire life.
Now, in my 58 years prior, I have never given the witnesses the time of day. I am always polite and chatty-but I have been careful to never come to a full stop when I passed them pleasantly sitting near the store I was headed to. I have had a Bible verse "shout-off" with a witness in California who dared to leave literature with my young daughter when I was not at home. (Daughter opened the door because she was expecting her little friend-I let her know it could have been a slasher)
This is all noteworthy to illustrate - I was ready to sit down with these folks.
The first thing they assured me of was that they only point out what is in the Bible and do not in any way put their own spin on anything. The little booklet is just like a Cliff Notes (you get the summary but not the meat) version used to point you to read your own Bible-I dug mine out and realized the last time it had been opened was midnight 2000. I wanted to be covered if the world ended like the hysteria was insisting-I didn't and had not picked it up since-typical!
The first scripture I was pointed to was Psalms 83:18 "That men may know that thou, whose name alone is JEHOVAH, art the most high over all the earth."
Whoa!
Now I'm paying attention. God is a title like Woman, or Father or Mother; I wouldn't be too moved by someone calling me a title instead of my name which indicates a personal relationship.
Now, I'm getting stuff I can work with.
I have been sent very capable "subs" when my main person was not available which has only been to go for a family visit or to attend a convention-and I always get a little token of love to let me know they were thinking of me while away.
Sunday morning at 8 am, as I sip my morning coffee watching the sun chasing away the cobwebs of the retreating week, they pull into my driveway, bringing joy, faith and wisdom.
Never anything that I have to quote some guy-I hate mindless babble and party lines-always a few refrences and gentle reminders of the excitment to be found in the pages of the Bible.
There is no "religion" here; no preacher; no tithes-just people like myself who treat me like a grownup.
I thank my angels for sending Toby, Tanya, Mary, Russell, Elenora and Chantel into my life with His word. How very cool is that!
