Bonjour my fellow Mother Earthsters!

I was so disappointed today when I went into the greenhouse.

All of my cucumber plants that I'd grown from seeds, and that Demelza has been lovingly watering, had all disappeared.

I planted some more seeds and now want to keep the snails at bay.

I want to do this in a friendly manner, so please give me your tips.

Thank you.

Sarah

Hi Sarah,

So very sorry to hear of your loss. I know how disheartening that can be. The best ways I have found to repel snails in your garden has been using small dishes filled with beer or water kept at the plants base. The snails are atttracted to the beer then drown.

Also you can purchase a copper banding to place in the soil around the plant. they seem to have an aversion (if that's right word) to copper.

Best wishes fellow earthling!

Hello Heidi,

That was a quick response. Thank you.

I hadn't heard about the copper before. Someone told me to sprinkle table salt all round the greenhouse. Do you know if that works?

Sarah

 Hi Sarah,

Yea was in the neighborhood already! LOL

Salt can work, but I would guess that that would only work if you were to do this before they had already invaded your growing space. Also salt can  compromise the soil.
Anyone else tried this solution? I would be curious to hear more on this avenue.
The copper I like because you don't have to kill them and it can be reused yearly.

It is a bit pricey but in my opinion well worth the investment to protect your investment.

Smiles to you!

Sunny Greetings from California, Sarah!

I just want to stop by to see to say "Hello." Thank you for the invitation. I like your forum a lot as gardening is also my hobby.

I think that practically every gardener is frustrated with snails. I have tried various tips to combat them over the years, but none has been entirely satisfactory. I don't think we can ever beat them  altogether. I have noticed that if I water in the evening, they will come out fast. Sometimes I come up with different methods to deal with them when they come out to dine on my plants, depending on my mood at a particular time. Most of the time, I try to make a game of it.

Have an Awesome Weekend!
