Yes these type of people are constantly lurking about. It is the topic of one of my forums threads. Some people try to mask their spamming efforts by coyely sliding a website or 2 that they are promoting into an invitation to be friends.
That is tantamount to walking up to your newest neighbor on the street and saying, 'hello, my name is Mark. Welcome to the neighborhood, would you like to buy my car? No? well then can interest you in a new vacuum cleaner for your new home?'
In you face marketing efforts were never popular but those days are now long gone. People are more sophisticated and make up their own minds based on information that you can provide to them, and it looks like to me like you have a great deal of helpful information to share with people.
