Norm,
I'm not actually afraid of the rodents, though I would fear being bitten by one if that were likely. It's more like disgust if I step on a dead one while not fully awake. (Gary, keep your visualizations to yourself, you rogue! lol)
Over the years my four kids had pets ranging from the normal dogs and cats (mostly the latter) to guinea pigs, rats and snakes. Adding the in-law's pets, I've had more-or-less friendly relations with horses, pigs, goats, wolves and a hedgehog.
Rats are extremely intelligent and can be endearing. Snakes are interesting and not at all frightening unless you encounter a pit viper--here we have rattlesnakes--in the wild. Goats are amusing, but the hedgehog was boring. Rolled itself into a ball and refused to interact, lol.
Based on that one paragraph about Scruff, I want to read your book. Write faster!
As for summer, last week we had three days that averaged high temperatures in the mid-forties Fahrenheit, and that was in the valley. Snow in the mountains less than five miles away, and one day we had hail that knocked some of the fruit off our tomato plants. If we're going to talk about global warming, we should start a new thread. I have some opinions on that, too, lol.
