Kwitcherbitchen!

Greeting, my friends, My thanks goes out to my friend, Arthur Webster who posted the question, "Are Old Coots a Dying Breed?" at Busy Bee Safelist Community Forums His question regarding the seeming lack of common sense in this modern world is one that seriously needs to be addressed. Common sense does, indeed, seem to be dying out in this crazy world. This is the age of the victim. Nothing is your fault; everything is someone else's fault. It's become painfully popular in this modern age to air our dirty laundry in public, as so many talk shows prove. The fact is, continually reminding ourselves of how bad off we are is the best way to stay that way! I am amazed that while so many people push the religion of positive thinking, they still turn around and tell everyone all about how badly life (and other people) has treated them. My dad always told me, "You are responsible for your own life. Stand on your own two feet and quit complaining!" He proved his philosophy by his life. He was the eldest son of a drunk, the brother of 9 siblings, lived in abject poverty, as his dad drank every cent he made, and was on his own at age 13 when his dad finally died as a result of his drinking. According to modern society, Dad should have been a hopeless criminal with no chance to better himself, a victim of his circumstances. However, Dad is a decorated Korean war vet, the husband for almost 50 years of my mom, the father of four, well-adjusted and relatively successful children who all have families, too, a pillar of his community and church, and now comfortably retired on the money he saved over his lifetime of hard work. It's interesting that at the time he had to go out on his own, both his mother and the government of the day said, "You are responsible for your own life. Stand on your own two feet and quit complaining!" God bless, Dave

Well said my friend! Very well said indeed. Life is what you make it, and it is absolutely true that, that which you think most about is what you will experience. So, if you want to be successful, you must think in terms of success. Those who dwell on failure will remain in a state of failure. Challeneges in life are meant to be overcome. They are lessons to be learned so that we may move forward. Your father is an excellent example of what it means to be successful! Have an awesome day Dave! Trina PS: I love the title to your post!

Hi, Dave Now I finally know what Arthur means when he says 'this has been an old coot moment'! I've been slightly off-base the whole time I've known him. This post, and his, are spot-on about being responsible for oneself. I've had an overdeveloped sense of righteous indignation all my life, more often than not on other people's behalf. All it gets me is wasted time, stress and an attitude problem. Far better to let it slide off my back and make my own reality. I'm especially glad I came to read this because it introduced me to Busy Bee. I'm off to read more about it. Cheri

Hi Dave, Well said. I agree with it all. I think the malaise of this "I'm not responsible" society that we now live in falls squarely at the feet of universities and lawyers. Universities are pumping out thousands of lawyers every year. But do we need them? When the concentration of lawyers becomes so extreme they have to manufacture work for themselves. So, they will take on the most spurious claims for "compensation." Often this is because their client is a full-blown twit who refuses to take responsibility for their own acts of stupidity. For example, take the case of the man who was driving his motor home down an American freeway. He set the cruise control then went to the back of the bus to make a cup of coffee. What would any sane person expect would happen? Of course - the bus crashed. But some knob lawyer then took on his case and won compensation against the manufacturer of the motor home. Now, idiot cases like this set legal precedents. They also encourage other fools to gold-dig their way to easy retirement by claiming millions in compensation against innocent parties. So now all any fool has to do is go to a lawyer and contrive a scheme to cover their own acts of stupidity. There are thousands of similar cases. Recently, where I live, a man dressed all in black laid across a road late at night and was run over. Guess who the lawyers blamed? This is where the world has gone stark raving mad! Dave - you shouldn't have got me going. This is one of my pet peeves! (As if you couldn't guess). Gary Simpson

Hi Trina, Yes, my dad is a great guy; I definitely appreciate him more and more as I "grow up!" We are very good friends, spend quite a few hours on the phone (he and I are separated by Georgia Strait) and do sometimes get into some pretty good debates... :-| Thanks for posting. God bless, Dave
