Hi, Dave,
A great man (my father) once told me 'winning isn't coming first - winning is to achieve a little bit more'.
He told me this after I had just run my second double marathon. I had finished second with a new personal best time.
My father listened as my mates on the finish line commiserated with me.
When the gym master came over in the same vane, my father finally had to say something. Being a blunt spoken man and easily frustrated by the fact that his blindness made him invisible (watch, next time you see a blind person in a restaurant, and count how many people will speak to the blind person through their companion) he shouted at the master to the effect that I had just run my personal best time and that if that didn't qualify as a win, the master must have a very impoverished outlook on life.
Winning isn't everything but coming first isn't always the only way of winning.
Regards
Arthur
