Hi:
You guys came so close that I have to give it to you. : )
Mark said; the other maybe something to do with happiness?
Winston said; Would another one be practicing a proper method for changing your neural pathways?
Deb said; Neural pathways can be chemically induced
The three things that help create new neural pathways are...
1) Repetition
The more often you do something, the more "natural" it becomes because DOING forges and strengthens neural pathways in the brain.
2) Visualization
The subconscious mind can not differentiate between what you think and what you do. That's why nightmares are so terrifying. When you have a nightmare, your conscious mind is asleep and your subconscious does not know that what you're dreaming isn't really happening. It is only when your subconscious starts to awaken that you realize it's not real.
There's a study that tells about 2 basketball teams getting ready for a game. One team was allowed to practice on the court leading up to the game. The other team was given NO practice time, but a hypnotherapist was called in to teach them self hypnosis and while meditating, they were instructed to "see" themselves getting baskets and winning the game. The meditators won the game by a landslide. Why? The other team was only practising what they already knew, while the second team was "seeing" the ball go into the basket and the moves it took to do that.
Thus, meditation and self hypnosis, in which you learn to calm your mind and visualize what you want helps create and strengthen the neural pathways in the mind.
3) Omega 3
Omega 3, which most of us don't get enough of, also helps to formulate and strengthen neural pathways. Without sufficient Omega 3 in our diet, it is harder for us to forge and strengthen neural pathways. It's like trying to run with a broken ankle.
And, as Mark wondered about, Omega 3 is directly related to happiness. There was a study done at the University of Toronto that made worldwide news. Several patients that were taking anti-depressants were taken off their medication and put on Omega 3. The results were phenominal. The Omega 3 had equal or better results than the prescriptions.
It is very difficult to change our behaviours (ie; neural pathways) when we don't have enough "happy" enzymes in the brain. Omega 3 is the natural way that the human brain obtains that enzyme.
Unfortunately, even if you eat fish once a week, you won't get enough Omega 3 today due to the changes in the food production industry and fish farming. So - a 100% natural supplement (not a chemical copy made by a pharmaceutical company) is an excellent boost to the brain.
Disclaimer: For anyone that's taking anti depressants, I am not a doctor and I am not dispensing medical advice. If you would like to know more, do some research on Omega 3 and the Toronto study and take it to your doctor to discuss what is best for you. You may also want to consult a doctor that is a qualified doctor that is also a naturopath. Please understand that this is my opinion, based on my own research, and is not to be treated as medical advice.
