And here is yet another enlarged detail including the Child. He certainly looks like her own child.

From 1881's Virgin, Jesus and St John Baptist

That must be her real baby, he captures perfectly the love in her eyes.

Now he has a look about him that is not baby-like.
Like he is thinking profound thoughts!

Between 1880-1882, Bouguereau is seen portraying little girls either by themselves or deep in conversation when in duos. Their spontaneous attitudes and charming expressions talk volumes.

William Bouguereau - La Soupe au lait
(oil on canvas, 1880)

William Bouguereau - Fishing for Frogs
(oil on canvas, 1882)

William Bouguereau - The Nut Gatherers
(oil on canvas, 1882)

Among the girls portrayed in those years, however, the two appearing here don't look very happy. In fact, the expression in their faces and the dresses they are wearing talk of poverty and deprivation.

I love the happy little faces, very natural.
Do you think the sad faces were requested by the artists?
These girls are not too young to respond to "make a sad face for me".
In fact they appear to be the same two little girls.
