In the below merry scene, he displayed all the qualities an accomplished work of art must have: beauty, color, harmony, movement... all of them. 	I don't know who his principle audience was, but maybe they were also fascinated by a different way of life that they had not been in contact with.

	You are of course right, Joyce; his main audience were the rich and powerful, the noble class, then his colleagues, et cetera; all of them must have been fascinated by the picturesque world that Bouguereau was displaying before their eyes almost for the first time.

	By mid-decade of 1870 Bouguereau had developed one of his most important trends, the religious painting. There may have been previous attempts like The Holy Family of 1863 (shown in page 5), but they don't quite impress the viewer as does the wonderful artwork below.
