Again, it would be difficult to choose a favorite between these two spectacular works. Both are equally impressive in their beauty. The one on top is awesome in its perfect sobriety; the one at the bottom feels like you are there listening to the waves in the lonely night...

Alexei Savrasov - Landscape with River and Angler
(oil on canvas, 1859)

Alexei Savrasov - Early Spring. Thaw
(oil on canvas, 1880s)

Here is one of your own Savrasov favorites, Roger. So impressive indeed!

Three dramatic representations of the Russian winter by Alexei Savrasov.

Two extraordinarily beautiful landscapes where peace would seem to reign forever - until a sudden storm breaks in. Here horizontalness almost knows no interruption.

Alexei Savrasov - Sundown over a marsh

Alexei Savrasov - Rye (oil on canvas, 1881)

Two different versions of the arrival of rooks every year. The one on top, which brought sudden fame to Savrasov, has been posted before (see page three of this thread). The more sober horizontal one shown at the bottom, of a rare beauty, is no less outstanding.
