This is the composter barrel that we bought this summer. Works great.

Critique of a compost barrel

This compost barrel works great for what I need right now. However, there are some flaws that I would like to point out, that ya'll need to be aware of and to try to avoid when you get your compost barrel.

The biggest flaw in this barrel is that it has a lid on both sides. The way the lids are designed, every time it rains, water gets into the compost and makes it very wet. Now, that works to help speed up composting in spurts, but it also drains many of the nutrients out of the compost and into the ground.

The liquid from composting is called compost tea, and can be used to fertilize plants. Now, with all the other fertilizing techniques I use, it's not a huge loss for me, but for folks who need more fertilizer than I do, it would be a big loss.

I will fix this issue soon, but there is not rush at this time. The spot where the composter is sitting needs the compost tea as it will be used in the future for some veggies.

The next flaw with this composter is the stand. It is not as sturdy as it should be considering the weight of the composter when it is full.

Did you know that your hair is another compostable material? How about natural fibers? Do you make crafts using cotton? Jute? Both are natural fibers that can be composted.

Do you have any straw brooms? You can take the broken straws off of it and throw them in the compost also.
