That's why you build the chicken coop next to the compost bins. This provides fertile cool place for them to go hide during the day and raid and seek the warmth of the compost bin at night. I remember having to keep a light on to keep them from crawling out of the refrigerator we raised our fishing worms (Big Fat Red Wigglers) in. We learned a lot from the "Chicken Lady" that lived down the road from our fishing hole. I learned to backyard farm from her when I was young. I used to ride my bike to her place and help her with chores.
Good stuff David!

Great idea Jim. You can also let the chicken poop dry, and use it as fertilizer in your garden. DON'T use it wet though, it's too acidic and will burn the roots of your plants.....

Hi David, Roger and Jim,
Wow this has becoming very interesting. However when you mentioned dried chicken poop. I remembered reading about it some time ago. It can cause eye problems. I found a good article on it. Please be careful.

Myrna,

That's if your not careful, and get it in your eyes, or on your hands and rub your eyes, etc.... as with anything else, use common sense when handling it. You don't want to start snorting it either......

With the composter that we bought a few months ago, I have gotten 3 loads of compost from it so far. Very nice, rich, dark loamy soil. Lots of nutrients for my garden. How are your composting adventures going?

Did you know you can compost during the winter? It takes a bit longer, but it can be done. Just remember 30% green material, such as grass clippings, kitchen scraps, etc... and 70% brown material such as cardboard, leaves, toilet paper or paper towel rolls.
