Wonderful light effects.

Great use of figures too. All helps to give scale.

Yes Roger, and some of the figures are so heart-touching - like the little deer in Peace at Sunset, which seems to have been painted with so much love despite its minute size (or mayby just because of it).

Here is a study Cole made for one of his recurrent themes, that of Arcadia and similar ones (would I own it...!) I will post the work itself probably tomorrow, so sorry I don't have enough time now. As usual, you may click on the below image if you want to enlarge it.

Wonderful light effects.

Great use of figures too. All helps to give scale.

THE DREAM OF ARCADIA

To art scholars, some of the most interesting paintings of the Romantic period are part of two series done by Thomas Cole: The Course of Empire and The Voyage of Life. "In these series Cole depicts the different stages of life, both on the large scale level of civilization and the personal scale of a man’s life."
(Brett and Kate McKay:
The Basics of Art: The Romantic Period)

W
hile Dream of Arcadia is not a part of any of these two series - which in fact were commissioned to him during his trip to Europa and especially to Italy - it certainly shows Cole's own deep interest in the theme of cyclic ages and the life of civilizations.
