Hello Mike

I like your idea, too. If you don't feel up to putting it together, I think Adland should be interested in doing it as it would bring new people to Adland.

I would pick a shorter catchy name like Adland Recycle but it is your idea so I will be happy with whatever you call it. Another thought came to mind >> Adland Free Stuff. If someone is willing to ship an item, the person getting the item should be willing to pay the shipping costs plus an extra $5 or so for their work.

My daughter got a water and filter system (worth about $200) from Freecycle. It is something she has wanted for a long time and probably would have been happy to get it even if she had to pay for shipping plus handling.

Some may not want to be bothered with shipping. They could say so in their description of the item.

I'm just thinking out loud.....

10_1_136.gifHi Helen,
Both of those sound good to me. I have been thinking about this for awhile. Shirley and I live in an apartment complex. When people move out, they throw out things that they don't need. I have seen boxes of clothes, clean and neatly folded, Baby Strollers, baby clothes still in the plastic bags that they came in, VCR's minus the remote, and so much useable and almost new items, that it really makes me sick. About five years, there was a young couple that lived upstairs. After a couple of months they had a fight. He took his belongings and left. She did the same and threw what she did not want in the Dumpster. While taking out the trash, I saw a box that did not look like it had been opened. I brought it in our apartment and realized that it had not been opened. It was a full set of Glass pans with the lids. We are still using it.
Wasting perfectly good items makes me sick when I think of how many people could use those items. For most of my life, I have been a kook (I mean cook)I have actually had tears in my eyes when I have had to throw out perfectly good food because it wasn't sold. While working for Kentucky Fried Chicken, it was normal to throw out between ten to twenty whole chickens at the end of the night. I asked my Supervisor one night why he couldn't donate the food to a local food pantry and he said that it would be a waste of time and that he had more important things to do. Wheather people respond to the forum that I am trying to create or if they begin to donate items to their local Goodwill Store or Salvation Army, or DAV or something so that the items that they no longer need can be put to good use.
When truckloads of trash are taken to a local Landfill, they are dumped in specified locations, sorted, and buried. This is after the workers take out items that they can sell. Once they are buried they begin to decompose. After they decompose they turn into Methane Gas. There are several stacks throughout the Landfill where the Methane is burned off and released into the atmosphere. What could have been used by someone in need is now a toxic gas that we breathe in every day. There is a solution. Compassion!! Help your neighbor and at the same time help us all to breathe cleaner air.
GOD BLESS YOU

Hi Mike, I too hate seeing anything go to waste. I guess a lot of that comes from being very poor when I was growing up. I've not gotten out and explored a whole lot since I moved here a couple of months ago but I have seen a lot Goodwill and thrift stores in the area as I am out driving about. I'll gradually get around to some of them at least. It is amazing some of the things you find at Goodwill and thrift stores. Down here a lot of people have lost their homes and a lot of them couldn't afford to move their furniture to a new place, city, state or where ever. I know how expensive it was for me and my son drove a Uhaul down with my stuff that I rented. Between the gas for the truck and the rental it was quite expensive. Too there are a lot of retired people here who die and their children either have an estate sale and donate the left overs or they donate everything at once, especially if the children live out of state. I also seen nice things on the curb people have put there for whoever wants them for free.

I have heard some of the horror stories about Craigslist but I bought a 12 foot long entertainment center off Craigslist that cost me about a 5th of the original price so if you watch the ads you can get some really good bargains. I still need one more bedroom suit and I'm keeping an eye out for a bargain. (I LOVE a bargain) :) The reason I bought the entertainment center was to fill up space. My living room is very big and needed more furniture. I also bought a bedroom suit I found at a consignment store at a very good price. I forgot, there are a lot of consignment stores here too. I also think your idea is a good one. Not sure how much help I could be but I would be willing to try.

Hello Evelyn,
At first I thought the little 2 year old girl was just making a noise until I listened more closely and actually heard her singing in tune.

I have been watching recommended videos of many children singing praises, powerfully and so clearly, pronouncing their words properly (no baby babble) they seem to be getting younger up on stage. Amazing.

Hi Amanda

It's a boy. He even sings harmony at one point ...albeit, briefly.

Hi again, Mike

When you take something home (especially out a dumpster) you need to be careful about bed bugs that might have crept into the boxes etc. It would be easy to see bugs on glass as they have nowhere to hide but they can hide in the folds and creases of the box it came in. The bugs have even more places to hide in corrugated cardboard boxes. It should be ok if you leave the boxes in the garbage after having removed the items in them.

As for clothes, no matter where they come from, I would put them in a plastic bag (preferably clear) tied tightly shut, if I wanted them, and then I would take them straight to the laundry and put them first in the dryer with the heat cranked up as high as it will go and keep them in there for at least 45 minutes. (Bugs will die at 140 degrees F). Then, of course, I would wash them. "Dry" them first, then wash them and then dry them again. In the meantime, I would get rid of the plastic bag.

I don't know how we will avoid bed bugs completely especially when they increase in numbers. They could even be in new clothes having found a place to hide in corrugated boxes they came into the country in. One of our local libraries even had bedbugs, of all things.
