And here is Caspar David Friedrich's perhaps second-best-known master work: The Cross in the Mountains or Tetchen Altar, of 1807-1808, which, if I am not mistaken, was the first of his paintings to really grab the attention from the critics in his time. I am showing it with the frame the author himself made for it. Immediately below is a similar version of 1812 ("The Cross on the Mountain"), devoid of any adornment. The symbolism is decreased in this latter. As usual, you may click on the images to enlarge them.

By contrast, The Summer (1807), one of his earlier oils, is a beautiful, idyllic painting with no discernible symbolism other than, perhaps, represent a hypothetical Golden Age of times past.

Here is another church in an unusual setting and again, hardly visible in the fog. As previously noted, Casper David Friedrich seems to have had a special liking for it. This time, however, not only is the effect strangely beautiful but the elements in the foreground give the whole an eerie plasticity.
