Linda,
After reading the replies to this and seeing your follow up, I guess I'll stick my 2-cents in. When I first read your question, my thought was that a resolution and a goal are very similar, however New Year's resolutions have become the symbol of broken promises to oneself. Then I saw the definitions you gave, and the next thought came.
As a student of the Law of Attraction, I've learned that words are very powerful. One wants to select the one with the proper nuance, and also to think through the implications of the selected word. I've learned to use "intention" rather than "resolution".
Therefore, it's easy to see the difference. If I have an intention to reach a goal, I have decided to go from point A to point B. The actions I take along the way, as everyone has stated, determine whether I will in fact reach my destination.
My goal for the past several years has been to completely free my husband from the corporate world by replacing his income with other income, preferably passive. This year we will be adding real estate investments to the mix of businesses I have interest in, and expect that to put us over the top. Before he will consent to quit his job, he wants to see me increase my income by $5000 per month at least 3 months in a row, and we'd both like to see $30,000 in liquid savings for backup.
