Protesters demand Nicaraguan President Ortega step down after hundreds killed in clashes

Thousands of people marched yesterday in Nicaragua to demand that President Daniel Ortega step down. The demonstrations over proposed benefit cuts, which began three months ago, are expected to continue today.

Human rights groups say about 300 people have been killed during the protests, many by police.

U.S. Senator Marco Rubio has warned that deadly clashes in Managua could lead to civil war, and worsen the immigration crisis in the U.S.

Anti-government marchers demand the resignation of President Daniel Ortega and the release of political prisoners in Managua, Nicaragua, Sunday, July 22, 2018. Anti-government protests began in mid-April over cuts to the social security system but broadened to include demands for Ortega to leave office and for early elections to be held.

CBS News correspondent Manuel Bojorquez reports an eerie quiet during much of the day in the capital city of Managua, as people stay home and business owners close up shop for their own safety.

But after the calm, the sounds of protest pierce the air, and the fear of bloody confrontations returns.

Within minutes of arriving in the capital, Bojorquez encountered an anti-government protest and the sound of mortar fire.

Several young men – masked and holding homemade mortar launchers – told Bojorquez they fire the mortars to warn fellow demonstrators when pro-government forces are near.

They told Bojorquez that they were willing to risk their lives: "The fear is gone," one said.

The fear was gone on April 19 – that's the day protests started over proposed cuts to social security benefits. Government forces are accused of killing more than 40 people that week. Hundreds have been killed since then, some even attacked while hiding in a church.

The uprising continues to intensify against President Ortega, whom demonstrators say has turned into a dictator and should step down. But Ortega remains defiant, insisting the protesters are being influenced by outside forces and blaming them for initiating the violence.

In the neighborhood of Monimbo, which had been a stronghold of the opposition, barricades built using cobblestones from the streets can still be seen. It was the site of a bloody confrontation with police last week. At this point, it's still not clear how many people were killed.

One woman feared being identified on camera, but wanted to let Bojorquez know one thing: her neighborhood was not backing down – that Monimbo had lost the battle, but not the war.

Several international organizations have called on the Nicaraguan government to end the violent suppression of protests and for President Ortega to allow early elections next year. He refuses to back down, which means the protests are likely to continue.

Nicaragua Clergy, Siding With Protesters, Becomes ‘Terrible Enemy’ of Ortega

MANAGUA, Nicaragua — Nicaragua’s senior Catholic clergy linked arms and pressed through a hostile, pro-government crowd screaming “murderers.” As they reached the basilica with a dozen people trapped inside, some of the mob burst in behind them.

In the scuffle, somebody slashed Managua’s auxiliary bishop, Msgr. Silvio José Báez, in the arm and ripped the insignia from his cassock. Eventually, the shoving ended and the clerics brought out the group — paramedics and Franciscan missionaries who had sought safety from the crowd.

Monsignor Báez brushed off the assault.

“What the people are going through is much more serious,” he said to reporters accompanying the clerics.

The Roman Catholic Church is on the front lines of an escalating conflict between the increasingly authoritarian government of President Daniel Ortega and the broad-based opposition that wants him gone. In a country where the church has often been immersed in politics, priests are both witnesses and players in the crisis that has racked the nation for the past three months and claimed almost 300 lives.

“We continue to be pastors, and an authentic pastor of the Catholic Church will never side with the executioners,” said Monsignor Báez. “He will always be with the victims.”

In the first days of the upheaval, Mr. Ortega appealed to the bishops to act as mediators in talks with the opposition, an alliance of disparate groups including students, business associations and farmers’ organizations. But as the government intensified its crackdown on the opposition, Mr. Ortega has stopped treating the bishops as neutral arbiters, unleashing attacks by his followers on priests and on churches.

Sex robot human CLONES: Chinese firm using 3D printers to scan and make replicas of PEOPLE

AN INNOVATIVE Chinese sex robot company is scanning full people to create 3D printed cyborgs replicas “developed from a real human”.

Developers at DS Doll are making advanced sex robots with artificial intelligence (AI) and full body movement at their workshop and factory in Dalian, a port city in north-east China.

The firm, one of China’s leading sex doll manufacturers, is about to release the first generation of its cyborg companion that can be “mass produced” and sold to customers across the world.

The team of researchers behind DS Doll’s sex robot has started to implement advanced manufacturing techniques to increase the speed and efficiency of production.

DS Doll marketing manager Sam told Daily Star Online that 3D printing is one method the company has adopted to make parts for the sex robots.

Eventually DS Doll is aiming to integrate 3D printing technology into its production line process, allowing the firm to make large quantities of sex robots at a rapid rate, Sam said.

SEX ROBOT CLONES: DS Doll is using 3D printers to scan and create copies of real people

“DS Doll is using the 3D printer to make many parts for the robotic doll prototypes, said Sam, who works for Cloud Climax, the flagship DS Doll reseller in Europe and the UK.

“They are using this technology to improve on the speed and processing times for making improvements to the doll robots.

“Whilst previously casts would need to be made and then moulds, we can now input and print in a much faster time.”

3D printing is the process of joining or solidifying raw materials using high-tech machinery and computers to make three dimensional objects.

To print an object, 3D designs created on computer software are uploaded to the machine, often via a memory stick, which builds the material layer-by-layer.

“They can be developed from a real human”

Sam, marketing manager for DS Doll

The final product is made up of thousands of layered miniscule slices of raw material in a process called additive manufacturing.

Sam said the 3D printing technology operated by DS Doll has the capability to make sex robot replicas of humans by scanning their full body into the software.

He said: “The 3D printer works by developing the shape of the particular part in the computer software and then transferring to the printer.

“It is also connected to a 3D scanner which can be used to scan in the body of a full person as well as prototype parts for replication.

“This type of technology is excellent for creating new doll bodies and faces as they can be developed from a real human.”

Sam believes 3D printing will became an integral part of the manufacturing process given its laser-guided accuracy and economic efficiency.

He added: “Using 3D printing streamlines the process of making intricate parts for the robots and means that all parts will be 100% identical.

“This means less wastage and lower development times.

“It is inevitable that this technology will become a large part of making robotic products in the foreseeable future for DS Doll.”

Sam has previously said that DS Doll can create sex robots with a “good likeness” of a person they are “looking to replicate”, but stressed they would need permission.

Cloud Climax has received enquiries about “sex dolls based upon celebrities”, he said.

MASS PRODUCED: DS Doll sells sex robots and dolls to customers across the world

WWE wrestlers, superheroes and Hollywood actors and actresses are among the most popular requests.

DS Doll does not actually sell celebrity sex dolls or robots due to copyright infringement issues.

Celebrities would need to give their consent to any company intending to copy their image in sex robot form.

A number of robotics ethics and philosophers have claimed erotic cyborgs based on the image of celebrities will be popular in the future.

Dr David Levy, author of Love and Sex with Robots, has said there will “absolutely” be a demand for celebrity sex robots.

An end to wrinkles? Genetic researchers reverse signs of ageing in mice as they make hair grow back less grey and smooth skin in 'unprecedented' study

  • University of Alabama researchers induced mitochondrial depletion in mice
  • Mitochondrial dysfunction caused skin wrinkles and grey hair to appear
  • After reversing mitochondrial depletion, the signs of ageing in skin disappeared

Genetic researchers have reversed signs of ageing in mice by reducing wrinkles and making hair grow back less grey in an unprecedented study.

Researchers at the University of Alabama in Birmingham used an antibiotic to cause ageing by making the mitochondria within cells dysfunction.

As we age mitochondria, the powerhouse of the cell, begin to dysfunction. As mitochondria produce 90 per cent of the energy cells need to survive, the dysfunction can drive age-related diseases such as cardiovascular disease and cancer.

Scientists caused ageing in the mice by adding the antibiotic doxycycline to their food and water to induce a mutation.

Doxycycline effects the enzyme needed to replicate mitochondrial DNA, which depletes supplies and causes them to dysfunction.

After four weeks of being given doxycycline, mice developed grey hair, hair loss, and slowed movements and lethargy. After four to eight weeks, wrinkled skin developed.

These effects could be reversed by stopping doxycycline for a month, allowing depleted mitochondrial DNA to be restored.

Keshav Singh, a professor of genetics in the UAB School of Medicine, said: 'To our knowledge, this observation is unprecedented.'

Although the removal of doxcycline in mice affected the ageing process in skin, little change was seen in organs, which suggests mitochondria plays a more important role in different areas.

Dr Singh added: 'This mouse model should provide an unprecedented opportunity for the development of preventive and therapeutic drug development strategies to augment the mitochondrial functions for the treatment of aging-associated skin and hair pathology and other human diseases in which mitochondrial dysfunction plays a significant role.'

The use of doxycycline created similar changes to mice skin to both intrinsic - the natural process of ageing - and extrinsic - external factors which influence ageing - in humans.

The skin of mice with the mutation had increased numbers of skin cells, abnormal thickening of the outer layer, dysfunctional hair follicles and increased inflammation that appeared to contribute to skin pathology.

Being able to reverse wrinkles and hair colour through the reversal of mitochondrial dysfunction is 'surprising', according to Dr Singh.

He added: 'It suggests that epigenetic mechanisms underlying mitochondria-to-nucleus cross-talk must play an important role in the restoration of normal skin and hair phenotype.

'Further experiments are required to determine whether phenotypic changes in other organs can also be reversed to wildtype level by restoration of mitrochondrial DNA.'

Scientists Can Erase Memories in Mice: Traumatic Memories Could be Rewritten in Humans Soon

07-22-2018
Emily Jones

Scientists can alter and delete memories in mice. Now they say they're decades away from doing the same in humans.

It all began five years ago at MIT when Boston University Neuroscientist Steve Ramirez and his partner Xu Liu found a way to implant a false memory in a mouse's brain. In their study, mice reacted in fear to a stimulus, even though they had never encountered it before -- all thanks to a manufactured implanted memory.

Today, Ramirez and his colleagues are learning how to replace negative memories in mice with positive ones.

Positive memories are created by putting male mice in a cage with female mice, while negative memories are created by putting the mice in a cage rigged with electrical shocks.

Once the mice have been conditioned to react a certain way, Ramirez and his team surgically operated on the mice so that they can stimulate the brain cells associated with the positive and negative memories.

The researchers stimulated the positive memories while the mice were in the electrical shock cage. Amazingly, their behavior completely changed and they did not react in fear like they had previously done.

Essentially, the scientists were able to retrain the mice not to remember their traumatic experiences.

Ramirez and his team aren't the only ones with such findings.

University of Toronto neuroscientist Sheena Josselyn was able to completely eliminate fear memories in mice using a different technique.

She identified specific brain cells associated with fearful memories and made them vulnerable to a specific toxin. When they injected the mice with the toxin, those specific cells died, and the mice were no longer afraid.

"It's only a small portion of these cells, and the memory was essentially erased," she told National Geographic.

While human brains are much more complex and advanced than mice brains, Ramirez and Josselyn say their research could be used on people in the future.

"The human brain is a Lamborghini, and we're working with a tricycle, but the wheels still spin the same," Ramirez said. "Traumatic memories could be rewritten with positive information."

But not everyone will be able to have access to memory-altering technology. Experts say the techniques could be helpful for combat veterans who suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder.

"The idea of manipulating memories can and should be used in a clinical context," Ramirez said.

He believes altering memories like water, it isn't inherently good or bad -- it just depends on the context.

"Something that elemental can either be used for nourishing your body, or it can be used for waterboarding. If water can be used for good and bad, anything can be used for good and bad," he says.
