After Warning of ‘Large and Painful Military Operation,’ Israel Begins Massive Bombing of Gaza

“Israeli snipers shoot and kill scores of unarmed Palestinian protesters in Gaza, including kids, then calls it self-defense. When a Palestinian sniper fires at one Israeli soldier, Israel bombs Gaza with F-16s and preps for all out war.”

(CD) Just hours after Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman warned that Israel is gearing up to launch a “large and painful military operation” in Gaza that would rival Operation Protective Edge—a 2014 assault that killed more than 2,000 Palestinians—the Israeli military carried out “wide-scale” airstrikes across Gaza on Friday following weekly anti-occupation protests along the border fence.

The airstrikes began to slam Gaza just hours after Israeli soldiers gunned down at least three Palestinians during anti-occupation demonstrations. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) says one of its soldiers was killed by retaliatory gunfire from the Palestinians.

“Palestinian defense forces fired back at Israeli snipers who have been murdering Palestinian men, women, and children for weeks,” noted journalist Ali Abunimah.

Yousef Munayyer, executive director of the U.S. Campaign for Palestinian Rights, added: “Israeli snipers shoot and kill scores of unarmed Palestinian protesters in Gaza, including kids, then calls it self-defense. When a Palestinian sniper fires at one Israeli soldier, Israel bombs Gaza with F-16s and preps for all out war.”

In response to Israel’s “massive” wave of airstrikes, activists began circulating the #StoptheWar hashtag in an effort to pressure the international community to step in and stop Israel’s efforts to launch yet another catastrophic assault on the “occupied, blockaded, unlivable, and exhausted Gaza Strip.”

Munayyer of the U.S. Campaign for Palestinian Rights argued in a tweet on Friday that the airstrikes are a deliberate escalation that is merely a precursor to a broader military attack on Gaza.

“Israel has been planning another war on Gaza for some time. They recently conducted exercises, declared Friday as an ultimatum day, and the Americans to wrote a WaPo oped to open the Israeli propaganda campaign,” Munayyer noted, referring to an opinion piece co-authored by White House adviser and Trump son-in-law Jared Kushner, which blames Hamas for Israel’s brutal decades-long occupation of Palestinian territory.

“Seems Israel is hell bent on war, again,” Munayyer added.

Israel’s latest bombardment of Gaza comes just days after Israel further intensified its collective punishment of the Palestinian people by imposing “genocidal” trade restrictions on the occupied territory.

As Common Dreams reported, Israel’s legislature also approved a bill this week that enshrines “apartheid into law” and makes the 1.8 million Arabs living in Israel second-class citizens.

Israel evacuates 800 White Helmets from Syria to Jordan

Israel has evacuated some 800 members of the controversial Western-backed White Helmets from Syria to Jordan to be resettled later in the UK, Canada, and Germany, according to statements from Tel Aviv and Amman.

Emmanuel Nahshon, a Foreign Ministry spokesman, had confirmed on Twitter that “Israel has completed a humanitarian effort to rescue members of a Syrian civil organization (“the White Helmets”) and [their] families.” He chose not to disclose further details, adding only that the evacuees have been brought “to a neighboring country.”

Jordan, for its part, has also acknowledged that it allowed the UN to arrange for the entry and passage of 800 Syrian “civil defense workers,” according to Reuters, citing Mohammad al-Kayed, spokesman for the Kingdom’s Foreign Ministry. Amman acceded to give them temporary asylum in the country before they settle in the West.

Earlier, Al-Kayed said that Jordan had granted the request on purely humanitarian grounds after Britain, Canada and Germany each reportedly pledged to take in a share of the White Helmets fleeing what they describe as potential persecution by Damascus. Last month, Jordan, which already hosts some 1.3 million displaced Syrians, said it won't take any more in, stressing the need for a "political solution."

On Sunday morning, the IDF’s Twitter account confirmed that Israeli forces had evacuated “members of a Syrian civil organization and their families” at the request of the US and “additional European countries.” In a number of subsequent tweets, the military said that some “civilians” were rescued from southern Syria “due to an immediate threat to their lives,” and because Israel wanted to make “an exceptional humanitarian gesture.”

It did not clarify to which organization, if any, the evacuees belonged.

German tabloid Bild reported that hundreds of self-described aid workers operating exclusively in rebel-held areas crossed into Israel from southwestern Syria overnight on Sunday, citing its own correspondents in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.

The White Helmets' passage has been facilitated by Israel, according to Bild, which reports they have been transferred through an Israeli military base. The evacuation kicked off at 9:30 pm local time on Saturday and was expected to continue into the night. Several roads were put on lockdown by the army and police as part of preparations for the exodus.

Israel previously admitted that it has been providing humanitarian assistance to Syrian militants, treating over 1,000 wounded rebel fighters in its hospitals. According to Israel's ex-Defense Minister Moshe Ya'alon, the assistance was granted under the condition that the militants would not let Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) and Al-Qaeda affiliated fighters slip into Israel and would not do any harm to the population of Druze villages.

However, Israel has been adamant about not taking in Syrian refugees, with hawkish Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman stating last month that while the Jewish state keeps providing"humanitarian aid to civilians, women and children" camped on the Syrian side of the border, it "will not accept any Syrian refugee to our territory."

It was supposed that the White Helmets will not stay in the Jewish state for longer than is needed to transport them to the Jordanian border.

Once in the Jordanian territory, the Syrians will be confined to a specially designated restricted area where they will stay for a maximum of three months until handed over to one of the Western countries, Al-Kayed noted, adding that the scheme should not place any additional burden on Jordan, as the organization of their passage has been arranged by the UN.

It's yet unclear how the members of the White Helmets, who have on multiple occasions been reported as dealing with Al-Qaeda-linked militants, will be distributed among the potential recipients, with Bild reporting that it is yet unknown how many of them will come Germany's way.

A looming evacuation of the White Helmets from Syria was first reported by CBS News on July 14. The broadcaster reported that the issue was raised by US allies in conversations with US President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the two-day NATO summit on July 11- July 12.

Reportedly, UK Prime Minister Theresa May personally interceded on the White Helmets' behalf during Trump's visit to the UK, a day after the summit.

On Friday, CBS News reported that the operation was to be launched "very quickly" and proceed in accordance with a joint plan, thrashed out by the US, the UK and Canada.

Should There Be A Litmus Test For Politicians To Measure Their Stupidity?

Op-Ed by Catherine J. Frompovich

Did you ever hear this one: What’s the difference between dumb and stupid? The supposed answer is, “You can’t fix stupid!”

Keeping the above in mind, recently I came across some statements made by politicians, which prompted my thinking there has to be a litmus test for measuring the stupidity that every wannabe politician must take and answer publicly before qualifying to run for public office.

Is it true elected politicians can get away with statements like these:

U.S. Senator Charles Schumer (D-NY)

It’s racist to only allow citizens to vote.”
What?

Former Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi (D-CA)

“Just because someone is here illegally doesn’t mean they broke any of the laws.”
Ah, now come on, you should know better than that!

“Building a wall will violate the rights of millions of illegals.”
Is Pelosi in her right mind?

“But we have to pass the bill so that you can find out what is in it, away from the fog of the controversy.”
And the Democrats think she’s a great leader?

Former President George W. Bush

“Our enemies are innovative and resourceful, and so are we. They never stop thinking about new ways to harm our country and our people, and neither do we.”
Was that a fraudulent slip?

“There’s an old saying in Tennessee—I know it’s in Texas, probably in Tennessee—that says, fool me once, shame on—shame on you. Fool me—you can’t get fooled again.”
What is he trying to say?

“Rarely is the question asked: Is our children learning?”
Was English grammar one of his priorities in school?

“They misunderestimated me.”
Is that an oxymoron, or isn’t it?

Former U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld

“Reports that say something hasn’t happened are always interesting to me, because as we know, there are known knowns; there are things we know we know. We also know there are known unknowns; that is to say we know there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns – the ones we don’t know we don’t know.”
Talk about double-speak!

Former President Bill Clinton

“It all depends on what the meaning of the word ‘is’ is.”
That has to be an “all time classic” remark!

Former Washington, DC mayor Marion Barry

“Outside of the killings, DC has one of the lowest crime rates in the country.”
He had to have been kidding; no one can be that off-the-beam.

Former President George H.W. Bush

“You cannot be president of the United States if you don’t have faith. Remember Lincoln, going to his knees in times of trial and the Civil War and all that stuff. You can’t be. And we are blessed. So don’t feel sorry for — don’t cry for me, Argentina. Message: I care.”
What the hell was he trying to say?

“For seven and a half years I’ve worked alongside President Reagan. We’ve had triumphs. Made some mistakes. We’ve had some sex…uh…setbacks.”
Oh really….

Former President Ronald Reagan

“Well, I learned a lot….I went down to (Latin America) to find out from them and (learn) their views. You’d be surprised. They’re all individual countries.”
Brilliance unblemished!

“Facts are stupid things.”
Okay, so what do you call lies?

“I am not worried about the deficit. It is big enough to take care of itself.”
So that’s how it works!

Former Vice-President Al Gore

“During my service in the United States Congress, I took the initiative in creating the Internet.”
Maybe he should have done a better job.

“A zebra does not change its spots.”
If this is what he knows about animals, I wonder how much he really knows about climate!

Obama-isms – all time Obama gaffes

I’ve now been in 57 states — I think one left to go.”
“Fallen heroes — and I see many of them in the audience here today.”
“The middle east is obviously an issue that has plagued the region for centuries.”
You’re absolutely right that John McCain has not talked about my Muslim faith…”
“Israel is a strong friend of Israel’s.”
The reforms we seek would bring greater competition, choice, savings and inefficiencies…”
“We don’t want people to stop, ah, fulfilling the core responsibilities of the financial system to help grow our economy.”
Democracy demands that the religiously motivated translate their concerns into universal, rather than religion-specific, values.”
I don’t oppose all wars. What I am opposed to is a dumb war. What I am opposed to is a rash war.”
As for our common defense, we reject as false the choice between our safety and our ideals.”
From a lawyer’s mouth!

Former Vice-President Dan Quayle

“The Holocaust was an obscene period in our nation’s history. I mean in this century’s history. But we all lived in this century. I didn’t live in this century.”
What?

“What a waste it is to lose one’s mind. Or not to have a mind is being very wasteful. How true that is.”
A true genius speaking!

“I have made good judgments in the past. I have made good judgments in the future.”
A time traveler?

“Welcome to President Bush, Mrs. Bush, and my fellow astronauts.”
Someone should have clued him in to reality.

“I believe we are on an irreversible trend toward more freedom and democracy—but that could change.”
Change, it did!

“Republicans understand the importance of bondage between a mother and child.”
Don’t use words you don’t know the meaning of.

Former Vice-President Joe Biden

“A man I’m proud to call my friend. A man who will be the next President of the United States—Barack America!”
Really?

“You cannot go to a 7-11 or a Dunkin’ Donuts unless you have a slight Indian accent….I’m not joking.”
How politically incorrect? And he got away with it! It didn’t prevent him from being VP of the USA, did it?

“Folks, I can tell you I’ve known eight presidents, three of them intimately.”
Oh, really!

Former President Jimmy Carter

“I’ve looked on many women with lust. I’ve committed adultery in my heart many times. God knows I will do this and forgives me.”
At least he admitted it!

Former President Richard Nixon

“I was under medication when I made the decision to burn the tapes.”
What a lame excuse!

“When the President does it that means it’s not illegal.”
What’s he talking about?

Former Vice-President Dick Cheney

“Go f**k yourself.”
Hard to believe, but that was said by Cheney to Sen. Patrick Leahy during an angry exchange on the Senate floor about profiteering by Halliburton, June 22, 2004

Now, here’s the strangest of the strange about politicians: The most popular Democrats who once were Republicans:

  • The late-former U.S. Senator Arlen Spector (PA)
  • Current Governor Jerry Brown (CA)
  • Current Senator Elizabeth Warren (MA)
  • 2016 Presidential Candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton (NY)
    Source: Ranker.com

My late father always used to say, “A Republican was a Democrat who didn’t make it and a Democrat was a Republican who didn’t make it.” I guess Dad was right!

All the stupid things said and done in the past by politicians of various stripes were overlooked and under-reported by the media. So, what’s going on now?

Apparently, the critical political-life-altering issue was the ultimate political disappointment that Donald J. Trump won the Electoral College vote 306 to Hillary Clinton’s 232! That’s not the first time such an upset occurred and was accepted by the country at large, but what’s been happening since truly is unprecedented—lawlessness bordering on anarchy!

So what words do Leftists want to mismanage?

Iran's Rouhani warns Trump about 'mother of all wars'

Iran faces increased U.S. pressure and looming sanctions after Trump’s decision to withdraw the United States from a 2015 international deal over Iran’s nuclear program.

Addressing a gathering of Iranian diplomats, Rouhani said: “Mr Trump, don’t play with the lion’s tail, this would only lead to regret,” the state new agency IRNA reported.

“America should know that peace with Iran is the mother of all peace, and war with Iran is the mother of all wars,” Rouhani said, leaving open the possibility of peace between the two countries, at odds since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

“You are not in a position to incite the Iranian nation against Iran’s security and interests,” Rouhani said, in an apparent reference to reported efforts by Washington to destabilize Iran’s Islamic government.

In Washington, U.S. officials familiar with the matter told Reuters that the Trump administration had launched an offensive of speeches and online communications meant to foment unrest and help pressure Iran to end its nuclear program and its support of militant groups.

Current and former U.S. officials said the campaign painted Iranian leaders in a harsh light, at times using information that is exaggerated or contradicts other official pronouncements, including comments by previous administrations.

Rouhani scoffed at Trump’s threat to halt Iranian oil exports and said Iran has a dominant position in the Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz, a major oil shipping waterway.

“Anyone who understands the rudiments of politics doesn’t say ‘we will stop Iran’s oil exports’...we have been the guarantor of the regional waterway’s security throughout history,” Rouhani said, cited by the semi-official ISNA news agency.

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Saturday backed Rouhani’s suggestion that Iran may block Gulf oil exports if its own exports are halted.

Rouhani’s apparent threat earlier this month to disrupt oil shipments from neighboring countries came in reaction to efforts by Washington to force all countries to stop buying Iranian oil.

Iranian officials have in the past threatened to block the Strait of Hormuz in retaliation for any hostile U.S. action.

On Sunday, Iran’s ground forces commander became the latest military figure to back Rouhani’s apparent threat, the semi-official news agency Tasnim reported.

“The Strait of Hormuz region must either be safe for all or be insecure for everyone,” said General Kioumars Heydari, quoted by Tasnim.

Separately, a top Iranian military commander warned that the Trump government might be preparing to invade Iran.

“The enemy’s behavior is unpredictable,” Tasnim quoted military chief of staff General Mohammad Baqeri as saying.

“Although the current American government does not seem to speak of a military threat, according to precise information it has been trying to persuade the U.S. military to launch a military invasion (of Iran),” Baqeri said.

Iran’s oil exports could fall by as much as two-thirds by the end of the year because of new U.S. sanctions, putting oil markets under huge strain amid supply outages elsewhere.

Washington initially planned to shut Iran out of global oil markets completely after Trump abandoned the deal that limited Iran’s nuclear ambitions, demanding all other countries stop buying Iranian crude by November.

But the United States has somewhat eased its stance, saying it may grant sanction waivers to some allies that are particularly reliant on Iranian supplies.
