BRIEFLY

Stuff that matters

THERE WILL BE FLOOD

Coastal cities are in serious jeopardy, new sea-level rise study shows.

As I wrote in a cover story last month, massive sheets of ice in Antarctica essentially hold humanity hostage, placing hundreds of millions of people at risk of inundation from rising seas.

A new study, which factors in the global implications of Antarctic tipping-point mechanisms for the first time, confirms the importance of these glaciers in predicting the odds of rapid sea-level rise.

The results, published in the journal Earth’s Future, point to two possible pathways: 1) a relatively steady but substantial rise in sea levels even if we sharply reduce global emissions, flooding 100 million people’s homesworldwide by the end of the century, and 2) a wild-card world that could jeopardize civilization itself if fossil fuels continue to dominate.

The study’s mid-range estimate under this second scenario predicts almost 5 feet of sea-level rise by 2100. That was essentially the worst-case scenario in a similar study by the same authors just three years ago. At the high end, the new study estimates there’s a 10 percent chance that seas will rise more than 8 feet this century — enough to flood nearly every coastal city on Earth.

That stunning revision upwards highlights the urgency of reducing emissions. “We can basically rule out 6 feet of rise if we get securely on a trajectory toward net zero emissions,” the study’s lead author, Bob Kopp, told Grist.

Celebrities Send Messages Of Support To Bullied Tennessee Student

Doha Madani

Actors, athletes, musicians and other big name celebrities are using Twitter to rally behind a Tennessee student after an emotional video showed the boy crying about being bullied.

Keaton Jones, a young boy from Knoxville, became an internet sensation after his mother shared a video of his heartbreaking story on Facebook. Keaton was sitting in the car with his mom because he was afraid to go to lunch, and described how the other kids were bullying him.

“They make fun of my nose. They call me ugly. They say I have no friends,” Keaton told his mother as he started to cry.

Keaton began his video by asking why people bully other kids, but ended with a message to other kids who have been bullied, to give them some hope. The video has been viewed more than 18 million times on his mother’s Facebook page.

“I don’t like that they do it to me. And I, for sure, don’t like that they do it to other people, cause it’s not okay!” Keaton told his mother. “People that are different don’t need to be criticized about it. It’s not their fault.”

Kimberly Jones, Keaton’s mother, wrote in her post that her son was a good kid and encouraged parents to talk to her children about bullying. Jones did not immediately respond to HuffPost’s request for comment.

The viral video caught the attention of some big names, who wanted to send love and support for Keaton. Actors Chris Evans, Millie Bobby Brown and Patricia Arquette are just a few of the celebrities who have reached out on Twitter to give Keaton some hope.

“Stay strong, Keaton. Don’t let them make you turn cold,” Evans tweeted Sunday. “I promise it gets better. While those punks at your school are deciding what kind of people they want to be in this world, how would you and your mom like to come to the Avengers premiere in LA next year?”

Keaton has received tons of invitations like Evans’ since the video has been out, including being invited as Hailee Steinfield’s date to the “Pitch Perfect 3” premiere. Tennessee Titans tight-end Delanie Walker invited Keaton and his family to a New Year’s Eve game against Jacksonville.

UPDATE ― Dec. 11: The principal of the Horace Maynard Middle School responded to concerns about bullying at the school on Monday. Principal Greg Clay told the Knoxville News Sentinel that “action was taken” by the school after the incident occurred, and the school is planning an anti-bullying assembly to address the issue.

“We’re having a good school year,” Clay said. “I’m sorry it’s like this. We all sympathize with Keaton and we’re doing everything we can to make sure it never happens again. Everybody saw the video and it was horrible. We don’t want anyone to feel like that. Keaton’s a good kid. We’ll take care of him.”

Facebook and Twitter users also have raised questions about the family’s political viewsand intentions in sharing the video.

NORTH KOREA'S KIM JONG UN PROMISES TO BUILD MORE A-BOMBS, H-BOMBS AND MISSILES WHILE HONORING ROCKET SCIENTISTS

BY

For Kim Jong Un, North Korea’s current military arsenal is just not enough.

On Tuesday, the North Korean leader pledged to create more nuclear weapons as he was awarding scientists and officials who have contributed to the construction of the Hwasong-15, deemed one of the country’s most advanced intercontinental missiles, Reuters reported.

Kim said during a two-day munitions conference that his group of scientists and workers will continue making more weapons and equipment to “bolster up the nuclear force in quality and quantity,” Reuters added citing a report by the country’s central news agency on Wednesday. He added at the close of the ceremony that Pyongyang should create and build more diverse weapons.

According to state media, Kim “solemnly declared that the development of new strategic weapon systems including A-bomb, H-bomb, and ICBM Hwasong-15 with indigenous efforts and technology and the realization of the great cause of completing the state nuclear force serve as a great historic victory of our Party and the people of the country,” Reuters said.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un watches the ballistic rocket launch drill of the Strategic Force of the Korean People’s Army (KPA) at an unknown location, according to this undated file photo released by North Korea’s Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), in Pyongyang, North Korea, on March 11, 2016.REUTERS

Kim celebrated the creation of Hwasong-15 during the conference. The latest missile was tested on November 29 and registered an altitude of almost 4,500 miles—a farther reach than its predecessor, the Hwasong-14, considered by some experts as North Korea’s first intercontinental weapon. At the time of its launch test last summer, the Hwasong-14 reached a range of nearly 4,000 miles, a distance that could cover much of Alaska, according to Wired.

While some experts believe that Hwasong-15 represents a bigger threat since its range can hit anywhere in the continental U.S., others have noticed several flaws in the missile’s images. Marco Langbroek, a space expert, told CNN that North Korea tampered some of the Hwasong-15 pictures. “You should see constellations that are opposites in the sky. That is not the case,” he added.

Other experts cited by Reuters added that North Korea still has to improve technical issues before effectively completing the development of a missile that could impact the entire U.S. territory.

Nevertheless, North Korea’s missile tests have prompted the U.S., South Korea and Japan to conduct military drills, according to Newsweek citing media reports. South Korea’s military announced that the three allies have conducted exercises using their Aegis destroyer warships, as well as a computer-simulated detection and tracking of launched missiles by Pyongyang in order to share an analyze data. This is the sixth time trilateral drills were performed since June 2016.

In the wake of the isolated nation’s missile tests, President Donald Trump’s national security adviser H.R. McMaster said during an event Tuesday that the “best chance to avoid conflict [with North Korea] is right now” because “time is running out.”

North Korea's newest claim: Kim Jong Un can control the weather
, USA TODAYPublished 3:26 a.m. ET Dec. 11, 2017 | Updated 10:57 a.m. ET Dec. 12, 2017

North Korea has made many incredulous claims about the powers of leader Kim Jong Un and his family. Now it’s boasted of the greatest yet: He can control the weather.

After releasing images this weekend of a smiling Kim on top of Mount Paektu, an active volcano on the China and North Korea border, the nation's state media said the "peerlessly illustrious commander" can control "the nature."

The evidence for this weather modification?

When Kim "ascended" to the top of the 9,000-foot mountain through thick snow wearing his signature double-breasted winter coat and black leather shoes, a blizzard gave way to "fine weather unprecedented."

Kim was apparently responsible for this moment of sunshine on what should have been, according to a North Korean government statement, a dreary winter day.

"Mount Paektu presented charming scenery showing magic peaks and dazzling sunshine on its clear and blue waves," the account of Kim's journey up the mountain published in North Korea's official state newspaper Rodong Sinmun said.

According to the account, Kim's trek also put him in a nuclear frame of mind.

"Imposingly standing on Janggun Peak, the respected Supreme Leader gave a familiar look for a while at the dizzy cliffs and the sea of trees, recalling the emotion-charged days when he realized the great historic cause of completing the state nuclear force without yielding even a moment and with the indomitable faith and will of Paektu."

Still, unusual things do apparently happen at Mount Paektu. Kim's father, Kim Jong II, claimed that he was born on a secret military camp on the mountain and that his birth there coincided with the appearance of a double rainbow in the sky.

According to his official biography, Kim Jong II also claimed to be a master golfer who shot 11 holes-in-one in his very first game. At various times North Korean state media has reported that his son started driving at age 3 and is responsible for various medical breakthroughs in the treatment of cancer, Ebola and other serious illnesses.
