Corruption of Science: Coca-Cola's Shady Record in Obesity Research - 'Dracula in Charge of the Blood Bank'

Coca cola
It was revealed back in 2015 that Coca Cola invested at least $4 million in founding the 'Global Energy Balance Network' (GEBN), a non-profit organization run by university scientists engaged in obesity research projects.

The group said that halting weight gain should be less about dieting and more about "maintaining an active lifestyle and eating more calories". They claimed that there was no compelling evidence to suggest that people should blame fast food and sugary drinks for the obesity epidemic. GEBN's message was that "obesity is not about the foods or beverages you're consuming, it's that you're not balancing those foods with exercise". Their main claim was that there was "strong evidence" that lack of exercise is mostly to blame for obesity, not poor diet. GEBN's website and social media pages are no longer available after their industry-sponsorship came to public awareness.

In the same year, the public learned that Coca-Cola spent £8.9 million over the past five years funding top British scientists carrying out research on healthy-eating, including the British Nutrition Foundation (£224,769), the National Obesity Forum (£67,300) and the Science Media Centre (£30,000), which promotes the "voices and views of the UK scientific community to the news media."

Top scientists also received cash from Coca-Cola, some of whom advise government bodies. In addition to funding prominent British scientists, Coca-Cola also paid £4.8 million to the European Hydration Institute, a research foundation which recommended people to consume sport and soft drinks of the kind the company sells.

Dr. Barbara Bowman, a veteran leader within the Centers for Disease Control's division for Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention, stepped down from her position in 2016 after it was revealed that she was assisting Coca-Cola and International Life Sciences Institute (ILSI) in influencing world health authorities on issues related to sugar and beverage policy.

Several of Bowman's emails showed how she provided guidance to Alex Malaspina, former top Coca-Cola executive and strategist. Malaspina, along with Coca Cola, helped found ILSI. The emails, obtained by a Freedom of Information Act, revealed that Bowman was eager to help Malaspina develop political influence with the World Health Organizations.

That same year, a study, conducted by researchers at Boston University (BU) and published in the American Journal of Preventative Medicine, found that the Coca-Cola Company and PepsiCo sponsored a combined total of at least 96 health organizations between 2011 and 2015. The American Diabetes Association and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation were on the list, a finding which the authors called "surprising, given the established link between diabetes and soda consumption." The study recommended that health organizations reject sponsorship from soda companies, urging alternative sources of funding.

That fell on deaf ears, as we are about to see.

In a similar vein to the GEBN nonprofit organization's claim that "it's the lack of exercise, not the sugary sodas", a major study titled 'The International Study of Childhood Obesity, Lifestyle and the Environment (ISCOLE)' was conducted between 2010 and 2014. Its primary objective was to determine relationships between lifestyle behaviors and obesity. The population studied included 6,000 10-year old children from 12 countries in Europe, Africa, the Americas, South-East Asia, and the Western Pacific. The children answered questions about their lifestyle, diet and physical activity. Parents and school administrators were also questioned. There were also several other factors monitored.

Geographic distribution of the International Study of Childhood Obesity, lifestyle and the environment (ISCOLE) sites.
ISCOLE was funded with a $6.4 million grant from Coca Cola and it appears that the study found that yes indeed, lack of exercise is a key predictor for childhood obesity. I counted a total of 28 additional studies related to the main one, including the following titles:
Chaput JP, Leduc G, Boyer C, Bélanger P, LeBlanc AG, Borghese MM, Tremblay MS. 'Electronic screens in children's bedrooms and adiposity, physical activity and sleep: do the number and type of electronic devices matter?' Can J Public Health. 2014 Jul 11;105(4):e273-9.

Roman-Viñas B, Chaput JP, Katzmarzyk PT, Fogelholm M, Lambert EV, Maher C, Maia J, Olds T, Onywera V, Sarmiento OL, Standage M, Tudor-Locke C, Tremblay MS; ISCOLE Research Group. 'Proportion of children meeting recommendations for 24-hour movement guidelines and associations with adiposity in a 12-country study'.Int J Behav Nutr Phys Act. 2016 Nov 25;13(1):123.
The authors of the original ISCOLE study, all 22 of them, declared that they had no competing interests. Nevertheless, at the very end of the entire paper, right after the acknowledgements and before the references, we have the following note:
ISCOLE is funded by The Coca-Cola Company. The funder had no role in study design, data collection and analysis, decision to publish, or preparation of the manuscript.
That is not the case though. A few days ago it came to my attention that a Freedom of Information Act request by U.S. Right to Know, a food industry watchdog group, uncovered evidence suggesting that Coca-Cola influenced the studies' design. "It appears that many of the ISCOLE scientists did not declare the full extent of Coca-Cola's involvement in their childhood obesity studies," said Gary Ruskin, co-director of U.S. Right to Know. "This raises questions not only about these Coke-funded studies, but also more generally about the accuracy of conflict of interest disclosures in other scientific studies funded by corporations."

In fact, a paper published in the Journal of Public Health Policy analyzed the ISCOLE studies and their emails obtained by FOIA. Thenews release reports:
The emails suggest that the researchers did consult and include Coca-Cola representatives in making strategic decisions about study design. In the early stages of planning the study, for example, the parties debated which and how many countries are to be included.

[Coca-Cola Chief Science and Health Officer Rhona] Applebaum emailed [ISCOLE Co-Principal Investigator Peter] Katzmarzyk on 26 March 2012 saying:

"Ok-so with Russia and Finland we are at 13? Or no Finland and at 12. Seriously-our CEO hates the #13".... She continued, "Serious about this 13 business. We have no FL [floor?] 13 at Coke".

Applebaum asked Katzmarzyk: "What other country should we look at?", to which he responded,

"We should talk about Russia as well-do you have contacts there already?...

Katzmarzyk to Applebaum, "We can work out a more detailed budget if this is something you would want to pursue".
For once, the Russians were spared...

Katzmarzyk and the Coca Cola Chief sound like they're pretty involved in making decisions. He sounds like an obedient servant too. If someone gives you millions of dollars to do something, you better do your job well!

Not surprisingly, it has already been found that studies financed by the food industry have an odds ratio of 7.61 greater probability of showing favorable results to the relevant food industry products than those studies which received no funding from the industry.

In regards to Coca-Cola's favorite theory of "it is the lack of exercise, not the sugary drinks", let's hear it from Gary Taubes who exhaustively covered this myth in his book Why We Get Fat. He shows that there has been an "exercise explosion" at least since the 1970s. People are going to the gym more than ever and some are even dying running marathons. It is argued that British children in the past did not do more physical activity than those from the 21st century, yet they were was far less obesity then than now.

As Prof Simon Capewell, from the University of Liverpool, says, "Putting the food industry in food policy is like putting Dracula in charge of the blood bank." He is right and Coca-Cola funding top scientists to conduct these studies is like a scene out of the movie Idiocracy.

But maybe we should just ignore all of this, and just "drink a coke after working out". This is what top scientists are advocating, even in an indirect way. Why shouldn't you? Here's why:

4 Palestinians dead, hundreds injured in clashes ahead of Mike Pence's visit

JERUSALEM — Dec 15, 2017, 1:30 PM ET

WATCHMiddle East protests continue after Jerusalem announcement

For the second Friday in row, thousands of Palestinians in Jerusalem, Gaza and across the occupied West Bank turned out to protest more than a week after President Donald Trump's announcement recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and days before his vice president visits the region.

Nearly 400 Palestinians were injured today across the Palestinian territories, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry. Four Palestinians have also been shot dead by Israeli forces, two in the West Bank and two in Gaza, the Gaza Health Ministry said. Today was the deadliest day since Trump's Dec. 6 announcement, and the funerals are expected to be held Saturday.

In Gaza, one of the two Palestinians killed was 29-year-old Ibrahim, a paraplegic who lost both legs during an Israeli airstrike in the 2008-2009 war with Israel, his family told ABC News.

In Jerusalem, Israeli police were seen handcuffing and dragging away a teenager on crutches who said he had a broken leg.

Massive Corruption Leads to 92% of Ukrainians Wanting Old Government Back, Thanks America!

Yanukovych Putin
Ukraine has long been known for pervasive corruption. Yet, the current US-backed regime in Kiev takes the cake - or rather, it steals it from disabled children.

Ukraine is so corrupt, Joe 'attaboy' Biden commented that corruption was "eating Ukraine like a cancer." He should know too, after one of his sons cashed in on the firesale of state assets following the US regime change operation there in 2014.

Not to be outdone, the first lady of Ukraine, Marina Poroshenko, is embroiled in a corruption scandal of her own. The country's Ministry of Justice suspects her involvement in a money-laundering scheme with funds meant for the families of children with disabilities. If true, it sounds like she could be a viable candidate for Ukraine's next president. She could do lunch and compare schemes with that haggardly has-been Hillary.

But the Ukrainian First Lady is probably just taking her lead from her husband. President Petro Poroshenko and his supporters have been making moves to do away with the country's anti-corruption bodies, drawing criticism even from the West. The head of Ukraine's anti-corruption committee, Yegor Sobolev, has recently been dismissed. He condemned the move saying, "the former and present corrupt elite have colluded. Their plan is to break the independence of anti-corruption bodies and replace them with fake ones." To make matters worse, Western governments have dumped millions of their citizens' tax-dollars into Ukraine's anti-corruption programs, with the result being... more and more corruption. Amazing!

Saakashvili
© Liveleak
It's bad news when Ukraine's anti-corruption efforts are themselves mired in corruption scandals. Former president of Georgia and ex-governor of Odessa Mikheil Saakashvili has tried to get in on the act by remaking himself - yet again, this time as an anti-corruption crusader!

Saakashvili was recently re-arrested in Kiev for support of a criminal organization and allegedly receiving support from ousted President Viktor Yanukovych and Russia in a plot to overthrow Poroshenko. If that sounds far-fetched, it's because it is. Given his background starting wars against Russia, Saakashvili is about as welcome in Russia as a fart in a space suit.

Meanwhile, Saakashvili is still wanted on corruption charges in Georgia, but that hasn't stopped him from leading anti-corruption protests against Poroshenko. In defiance of his arrest, Saakashvili is reportedly going on hunger-strike. This Machiavellian washout must think he is Ghandi protesting the British Empire... just make sure to keep all fashionable ties out of his sight so as to not tempt him!

It's easy to poke fun at Saakashvili, but the people of Ukraine are in a desperate situation that the West has a direct role in perpetuating. An independent poll indicates Ukrainians fear corruption even more than the war (let's face it though, most of these respondents probably aren't suffering from the Nazi-inspired campaign of terror inflicted upon the people of Luhansk and Donetsk). Nevertheless, all Ukrainians are feeling the deep effects of corruption at the top, and a new poll suggests that 92% of its citizens would prefer to have their old government back. Thanks America!

Fort Russ reports:
92% of the viewers of the Ukrainian news channel NewsOne voted in favour of the return of Viktor Yanukovych. The poll was conducted live on Saturday evening.

The audience was asked: "If you had a choice now - would you choose the past criminal authority or the current one - who would you vote for?"

During the hour, 46,686 people took part in the poll. 92% said they support the previous government - and only 8%, the current regime of Petro Poroshenko.
Last month the IMF's representative in Ukraine, Goesta Ljungman, slammed the country's permissible attitude toward corruption, saying it accounted for a 2% contraction annually. "In Ukraine, there is no genuine fight against corruption. Corruption costs Ukraine 2% of its economic growth, so the fight against it is an issue of economic prosperity," said Ljungman.

The real numbers are likely far worse. A news report from Russia-1 shows how Ukraine's current GDP is half of what it was the year before the coup. The average salary has gone from $408 per month to $196 last year, and foreign investment is less than a third of what it once was. This is the type of freedom the United States has brought to Ukraine. It's little wonder Ukrainians want their old government back.

Texas mother arrested after healthy son had 323 doctor visits, 13 surgeries, officials say

PHOENIX — A Texas woman has been arrested after her 8-year-old son had hundreds of unnecessary hospital visits and 13 surgeries, officials say.

The tipping point came last month, when 34-year-old Kaylene Bowen-Wright brought her son Christopher Bowen to a Dallas hospital, claiming he had a seizure, according to documents obtained by the Star-Telegram of Fort Worth.

The medical staff reported seeing a "general and full shake," but could find no evidence of a seizure, officials reported.

"I am very concerned that mother has moved from exaggerating symptoms to inducing symptoms," Dr. Suzanne Dakil wrote in the CPS petition, the newspaper reported.

How did this happen?

Investigators believe the medical abuse began when Christopher was only 11 days old in 2009, the Star-Telegram said.

Medical records show Christopher saw the doctor 323 times in Dallas and Houston between 2009 and 2016, according to the CPS petition.

Kaylene Bowen-Wright is charged with injury to a child with serious bodily harm, according to the Dallas County Sheriff's Office.

In his short life, Christopher was placed full time on oxygen and used a wheelchair at times. He had a feeding tube outfitted directly into his small intestine, which resulted in three life-threatening blood infections, the newspaper said.

Bowen-Wright had him in hospice care before and even tried to get him on the lung transplant list, the Star-Telegram added.

She was arrested and charged with injury to a child with serious bodily harm last week, according to the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office.

A YouCaring fundraiser two years ago, which raised more than $8,000, said the young boy was battling a severe case of arteriovenous malformation.

"Diagnosed at the age of two, the congenital condition is slowly taking the wind out of the sails of this bright and active boy," the campaign reads.

Doctors determined Christopher does not have cancer or many of the symptoms his mother alleged. In fact, medical staff deemed a majority of his procedures unnecessary, according to the Star-Telegram.

'The kids don't deserve that'

The child’s father, Ryan Crawford, told the Star-Telegram that he tried to persuade Dallas County Family Court judges that his son was not sick.

"How do you do 13 surgeries? How do you do it?" he asked. "How do you do 13 surgeries and not question the fifth surgery? The sixth surgery?"

Since being removed from his mother’s care, Christopher eats regularly, has had no seizures, feeding tubes, oxygen or an IV, officials said.

Crawford is currently looking to get custody of Christopher, who, along with his two half-siblings, was removed from her care and placed in foster care.

"It’s horrible for my son, or any kid because obviously, my son is not the only one that has had to go through this type of torture," Crawford told the newspaper.

PRIESTS COULD HAVE SEX UNDER AUSTRALIAN PROPOSAL TO END CHURCH CHILD ABUSE

BY

A five-year investigation of thousands of child abuse victims in Australia has led to one stunning recommendation: that the Catholic Church should allow priests to have sex in order to curb child abuse.

The Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse reviewed more than 8,000 cases since 2013, and found that schoolteachers and religious ministers accounted for the most child abuse complaints. Catholic priests accounted for 61.4 percent of the alleged religious perpetrators.

With that stat in mind, the final report released Friday offered hundreds of recommendations, including an end to the Catholic Church's centuries-old policy for compulsory celibacy, The Sydney Morning Herald reported.

The report said celibacy was "not a direct cause of child sexual abuse" but certainly "contributed to the occurrence of child sexual abuse, especially when combined with other risk factors."

Pope Francis deemed child sex abuse by Catholic priests a "monstrosity" last year and promised to crack down on priests who violated the compulsory celibacy rule.

“We will counter those priests who betrayed their calling with the most strenuous measures. This also applies to the bishops and cardinals who protected these priests—as happened repeatedly in the past,” Pope Francis wrote.

It is unclear how well the anti-celibacy proposal will go over. Archbishop Anthony Fisher of Sydney immediately sought to widen the discussion beyond pedophilia by priests, saying that child abuse is "an issue for everyone, celibate or not." The commission also recommended that priests should have to report child abuse cases that they hear in confessionals to authorities, asking bishops to appeal the secrecy law to the Vatican. But that also may be a nonstarter.

"The seal of the confessional, or the relationship with God that's carried through the priest and with the person, is inviolable," said Australian Archbishop Denis Hart.

In any event, changes are coming. Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Trumbull said the report "exposed a national tragedy" and called for a task force to start acting on the recommendations as early as next month.
