Here Are The Real Terrorists We Should Be Worrying About

Galactic Free Press's picture

Source: www.commondreams.org | Original Post Date: January 11, 2016 –

They consist of 16,000 individuals, about the size of a crowd at a professional basketball game. The inequality horror they’ve fomented is reaching far beyond the half of America that is in or near poverty, for it now impacts those of us well above the median, those of us in the second highest of four wealth quartiles.

1. The .01% Have as Much Wealth as 80% of America

The combined net worth of the 16,000 richest Americans is approximately the same as the total wealth of 256,000,000 people. Details for this statistic and other facts to follow are at You Deserve Facts.

2. Americans with up to a Quarter-Million Dollars are Part of the Nearly 80% of Americans with Less Wealth Than the .01%

The 80% includes all Americans with a net worth up to about $277,000.

3. The .01% Own about as Much as 75% of the Entire World

The world’s poorest 75% own roughly 4 percent of total global wealth, approximately the same percentage of wealth owned by the .01% in the United States. Again, calculations are shownhere.

4. The .01% – Who Are They?

It starts with the billionaires, the Forbes 400 and 136 more, for a total of 536 individuals with a total net worth of $2.6 trillion at the end of 2015.

It continues with more Ultra High Net Worth Individuals (UHNWIs). These loftily-named people, over 15,000 of them, are worth hundreds of millions of dollars apiece, bringing the total .01% wealth to about $6.2 trillion, based on 2013-14 data. But U.S. wealth has grown by about 30 percent in three years, and the Forbes 400 has grown by 38 percent, and thus the total wealth of the .01% has grown to over $9 trillion.

In contrast, a recent Institute for Policy Studies report calculated that the bottom half of America has about $732 billion in total wealth, and further calculations on the same data show that the bottom 75% of America owned about $6.2 trillion in 2013.

5. The Unique Brand of .01% Terror: Making a Game of Tax Avoidance While 2,500,000 Children Experience Homelessness

Wealth ownership is not contemptible if the owners of that wealth accept their responsibility to the society that makes their great fortunes possible. But instead of paying taxes, the wealthiest Americans have formed an “income defense industry” to shelter their riches, with, according to the New York Times, “a high-priced phalanx of lawyers, estate planners, lobbyists and anti-tax activists who exploit and defend a dizzying array of tax maneuvers, virtually none of them available to taxpayers of more modest means.”

On the corporate end, over half of U.S. corporate foreign profits are now being held in tax havens, double the share of just twenty years ago. Yet for some of our largest corporations, according to the Wall Street Journal, over 75 percent of the cash owned by their foreign subsidiaries remains in U.S. banks, “held in U.S. dollars or parked in U.S. government and corporate securities.” Thus they get the benefit of our national security while they eagerly avoid taxes.

The .01% go about their self-serving tax avoidance while 2.5 million children experience homelessness every year. The corporations of the .01% hoard hundreds of billions overseas while nearly two-thirds of American families don’t have enough money to replace a broken furnace.

This is real terror, facing life without shelter and warmth and sustenance, without a semblance of security for even one day in the future. It is terror caused in good part by the 16,000 people who don’t feel it’s necessary to pay for the benefits heaped upon them by a perversely unequal society.

Everything You Need to Know About Deadly Snowstorm Bearing Down on East Coast

Jan 23, 2016, 4:08 AM ET

WATCH Mid-Atlantic Gets Pounded by Winter Storm

In North and South Carolina, 114,365 customers were without power, according to Duke Energy, and the Virginia State Police responded to 989 traffic crashes and 793 disabled vehicles on Friday alone.

A shelter opened for drivers in Kentucky after Interstate 75 shut down due to bad conditions. Kentucky State Police tweeted late Friday evening that emergency management teams were making their way to the stranded cars with water and fuel.

More than 6,800 flights have already been canceled and cities are bracing for the worst.

Here's everything people on the East Coast need to know.

Fatalities

There have been three deaths in two states -- Virginia and North Carolina -- as result of this storm system Friday. All three were the result of car accidents.

Expected Snow Totals

- Washington, D.C.: In D.C. and Baltimore about 20 to 25 inches of snow is expected. If D.C. gets more than 20 inches of snow, this will be the biggest snowstorm since the blizzard of 1922 that left D.C. with 28 inches of powder.

- Philadelphia: Philadelphia is expected to get 18 to 24 inches of snow.

- Central NJ: Parts of central New Jersey could see up to 18 inches. Gov. Chris Christie declared a state of emergency for New Jersey Friday night.

- New York City: In New York City, 10 to 15 inches of snow is likely.

The Impact

Some 80 million Americans were expected to be impacted by the storm or bracing for the storm.

Winter Weather Alerts stretch from Mississippi to Massachusetts, spanning over 1,000 miles.

Blizzard Warnings

A blizzard watch is in effect for Washington; Baltimore, Maryland; Wilmington, Delaware; Philadelphia; Trenton, N.J.; Newark, N.J.; New York City; and Long Island.

Washington will be under a blizzard warning from 3 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Sunday.

In Philadelphia, the blizzard warning began at 7 p.m. Friday to 10 a.m. Sunday.

Snowfall was expected in the New York City area between 9 p.m. and 11 p.m. The storm will pick up in intensity by early Saturday morning.

The New York City blizzard warning will last from 6 a.m. Saturday to 1 p.m. Sunday.

A Potentially Deadly Storm for D.C.

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser said Friday morning that residents need to treat the storm as a life and death weather event.

"We’ve had a forecast we haven’t seen in 90 years,” Bowser said at a news conference. "It has life and death implications."

The mayor warned of high winds and potential power outages from trees taking down electrical lines.

“Our chief concern is making sure Washingtonians are safe throughout this event,” Bowser said, adding that “people need to stay inside” and not risk going out in the storm.

The city is asking residents to be prepared to stay indoors for 72 hours. Residents are also being asked to stay off the roads and stock up on food, water, battery operated radios and flashlights in case of power outages.

Problems in the South and on the Coast

As the storm was expected to move east Friday afternoon, heavy ice accumulation could cripple places like Charlotte, North Carolina; Raleigh, North Carolina; and Greenville, South Carolina.

In North Carolina, over 67,000 customers were without power as of 5 p.m. Friday, said North Carolina Emergency Management.

The state had about 1,274 reported traffic collisions, according to the North Carolina Highway Patrol.

On Friday evening, the storm was to bear down on the East Coast, from Virginia to New Jersey.

A coastal flood warning was issued for Virginia, New Jersey and the southern coast of Long Island.

Wind gusts could top 60 miles per hour this evening.

The worst coastal flooding and erosion will be in southern New Jersey, where some areas could see record flood levels. Waves up to 20 feet are possible along the Jersey shore.

A Winter Weather Emergency in NYC

A winter weather emergency will be in effect in New York City, starting at 8 a.m. Saturday morning and lasting until Saturday night at midnight, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced Friday.

The mayor said he might extend the emergency depending on conditions.

A winter weather emergency means any unnecessary driving should be avoided, he said.

"Unless it is urgent - stay off the roads," de Blasio said.

The mayor clarified that this is not a travel ban, which was instituted last winter during a snowstorm.

"This is less intense but still very, very serious," he warned.

"Stay off the roads tomorrow," he said. "If your vehicles are blocking the work of our snow plows, your vehicles will be towed."

Besides the heavy snow and strong winds, de Blasio said the city can expect whiteout conditions.

The brunt of the storm is expected to happen between 8 a.m. and mid-afternoon Saturday, but could continue Sunday morning, he said. About 12 to 18 inches is expected, the mayor said, although ABC News meteorologists predict slightly less.

A coastal flood warning is also in effect in New York City.

Flight Cancellations

In total, airlines have cancelled over 6,800 flights for Friday, Saturday and Sunday, according to FlightAware.com.

The Philadelphia airport has cancelled all flights for Saturday.

The Baltimore Office of Emergency Management tweeted late Friday evening that all flight operations at BWI Marshall Airport have ceased due to the inclement weather.

ABC News' Max Golembo, Dan Peck and Margaret Chadbourn contributed to this report.

Four dead in worst Canada school shooting in decade, suspect caught

WINNIPEG, Manitoba, and VANCOUVER (Reuters) - The gunman suspected of killing four people and injuring several others in Canada's worst school violence in a decade first shot his two brothers at home before opening fire at the remote community high school, a family friend and the town's acting mayor said on Friday.

Police said a suspect was arrested after the shooting in La Loche, Saskatchewan, an impoverished community about 600 km (375 miles) north of the city of Saskatoon.

The town's acting mayor, Kevin Janvier, told the Associated Press that his 23-year-old daughter Marie, a teacher, was shot to death.

He also said police told him that the gunman first shot two of his siblings at home and then made his way to the school.

Officials have not given a motivation for the shooting or named the suspect or victims.

Mass shootings are rare in Canada, which has stricter gun laws than the United States. In the country's worst school shooting, 14 college students were killed at Montreal's Ecole Polytechnique in 1989. A shooting in 1992 at Concordia University in Montreal killed four.

A family friend said the teenaged suspect shot his two younger brothers before going to the school and shooting a teacher and an assistant.

“After he shot his two brothers, he walked back to school and he shot ... a teacher and a girl. They’re both dead. Four of them died,” said Joe Lemaigre, a family friend who lives on the outskirts of La Loche. “I know the family. Their mother worked in Fort McMurray and his grandfather went to Meadow Lake to do some shopping. That's when he shot them."

The shooting occurred in the high school and a second location, Canadian police said, adding they took the suspect into custody outside the school and seized a gun.

Chief Bobby Cameron of the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations, which represents more than 70 of the province's Indian bands, said a few students were in surgery Friday evening in Saskatoon, the province's largest city.

"Everyone is still in shock and disbelief," Cameron said. "It's a very, very horribly tragic event."

La Loche student Noel Desjarlais told the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation that he heard multiple shots fired at the school, which has about 900 students.

"I ran outside the school," Desjarlais said. "There was lots of screaming, there was about six, seven shots before I got outside. I believe there was more shots by the time I did get out."

A cellphone video taken by one resident and broadcast by the CBC showed students walking away from the school across the snow-covered ground and emergency personnel moving in.

"Obviously this is every parent's worst nightmare," said Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who initially reported five people were killed. He was in Davos, Switzerland, for the annual World Economic Forum.

Among Canada’s provinces, Saskatchewan had the highest rate of police-reported family violence in 2014, double the national rate of 243 incidents per 100,000 people, according to a Statistics Canada report on Thursday.

Extra doctors and nurses were sent to treat patients in Keewatin Yatthe Regional Health Authority's 16-bed hospital, said spokesman Dale West. He declined to say how many people had been injured.

“It’s really sad in La Loche today, very depressing,” said Tenisha Lemaigre, who lives in the town of less than 3,000 people and said she knew many students.

Unemployment runs above 20 percent in the area but three-quarters of working-age people are classified as retired or not looking for work, according to 2011 government figures. Residents say the real unemployment rate is above 50 percent.

In 2014, a teacher expressed concern about violence at the La Loche school, noting that a student who had tried to stab her was put back in her classroom after serving his sentence, and another attacked her at her home.

"That student got 10 months," Janice Wilson told the CBC of the student who tried to stab her in class. "And when he was released he was returned to the school and was put in my classroom."

BREAKING: MILITARY MARTIAL LAW BILL SNEAKED THROUGH BY SENATE

Bill gives Obama power to deploy military anywhere - including on U.S. soil

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is attempting to fast track a “war powers” bill that will allow President Obama nearly unlimited power to deploy the military anywhere in the world for any length of time – including on U.S. soil.

“The Authorization for Use of Military Force put forward by McConnell would not restrict the president’s use of ground troops, nor have any limits related to time or geography,” Defense One reported.

In other words, the authorization allows the president to deploy the military anywhere at his discretion – both foreign and domestic – for as long as he wants.

Several senators, including Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn, were surprised by McConnell’s decision to fast-track the bill after a year of deep in-fighting over similar measures in the Senate.

“He did?” he asked the National Journal on Thursday morning when reporters informed him about the bill.

Even some Senate Democrats have an issue with a new authorization without geographical restrictions placed on the president.

“I’m for the Congress voting on an AUMF; of course it depends what the AUMF looks like,” Sen. Robert Menendez said Thursday. “I don’t want a blank check.”

It’s also interesting to note McConnell is trying to push through the bill on a Friday as an unprecedented blizzard slams the northeast U.S., including Washington, D.C.

Birth defects in Latin America spark Zika virus panic

AFP

Authorities in some Latin American countries are warning women to avoid getting pregnant for fear of the virus (AFP Photo/Orlando Sierra)

Sao Paulo (AFP) - Alarm over thousands of birth defects blamed on the mosquito-borne Zika virus spread Friday, as the United States expanded a travel warning for pregnant women.

With the sting of a mosquito bite and a fever, many pregnant women may not know that they caught the Zika virus -- until it strikes their unborn child.

Now authorities in some Latin American countries are warning women to avoid getting pregnant for fear of the virus.

Babies across the region, and at least one in the United States, have been born with abnormally smaller heads -- a condition doctors call microcephaly, which can cause brain damage.

The scare has struck hardest in Brazil, which hosts the summer Olympic Games in August.

It is one of 22 territories that the United States has warned pregnant women not to visit because of the Zika risk.

"I am very afraid," said Jacinta Silva Goes, a 39-year-old cleaning lady in Sao Paulo who is expecting her third child.

"For the moment, I am not using mosquito repellent because the doctor has not told me to. He has not spoken to me about Zika," she told AFP.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Friday extended the list of territories on its no-go list for pregnant women.

It added Barbados, Bolivia, Ecuador, Guadeloupe, Saint Martin, Guyana, Cape Verde and Samoa.

Last week, the agency urged pregnant women and women considering becoming pregnant to postpone visits to Puerto Rico, Brazil, Colombia, El Salvador, French Guiana, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Martinique, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Suriname and Venezuela.

- Pregnancy postponement advised -

The World Health Organization (WHO) this week noted a surge in cases of microcephaly in Brazil, the country most affected by the current epidemic.

WHO spokesman Christian Lindmeier said Friday there were 3,893 suspected microcephaly cases in Brazil, which included 49 deaths. Before last year there were about 160 cases of microcephaly in Brazil on average.

"The link between the Zika and the microcephaly... is still being investigated," Lindmeier said, but acknowledged that Zika "seems the strongest candidate."

He said there were "about 20 countries in the Americas which are reporting Zika cases, and about 10 in Africa, Asia and the Pacific," but the biggest outbreaks were in Brazil, Colombia and elsewhere in Latin America.

Scientists from Brazil's Fiocruz Institute and Parana Catholic University published a study of a case that showed the virus had passed from an infected woman to her baby through the placenta.

Across Latin America, citizens and officials have responded to the scare.

The price of mosquito repellent has risen in Brazil, where Health Minister Marcelo Castro said Friday that a "war" against the Aedes aegypti type, which carries dengue, chicungunya and Zika, was failing.

"For nearly 30 years the mosquito has been transmitting these illnesses to our population and since then we've been fighting, but we are losing," he was quoted as saying by Brazil's G1 news site.

In the Peruvian capital Lima, authorities disinfected a big cemetery for fear that Zika-bearing mosquitos were breeding in the flower pots.

Ecuador, Colombia and El Salvador have advised couples to avoid pregnancy for the time being. A medical school in Honduras issued the same advice.

- Olympic disruption threat -

Originating in East Africa, Zika landed in Latin America last year and has spread across virtually the whole region via Aedes aegypti mosquitos, says the Panamerican Health Organization.

There is no overall figure for the number of cases detected.

Zika has also been reported in the United States: three cases were detected in Florida in people who had recently traveled to Latin America.

The CDC said a newborn in Hawaii was found to have brain damage linked to Zika.

The baby was born to a woman who had been living in Brazil early in her pregnancy.

The scare came as many people prepared to travel to and around Brazil for the February carnival -- not to mention months before visitors from around the world will come for the Olympics.

The organizing committee for the Games said it hopes the slightly cooler, dryer weather in August will ease the problem by curbing the breeding of the mosquitos.

In Paris, Emilie Goldman, 33, had been planning a holiday to Bahia in northeastern Brazil, but canceled it at the last minute because she is pregnant with her first child.

"No one was talking about it in France, but I started talking to doctors to know about the possible effects," she told AFP.

"I realized that for a week of holidays, it was not worth the risk."
