Turkey alarmed by 'Russian build-up' on Syria border

Istanbul (AFP) - Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Friday expressed alarm over reports of a build-up of Russian troops in northern Syria near the Turkish border, saying such movements would not be tolerated.

"We have said this from the beginning: we won't tolerate such formations (in northern Syria) along the area stretching from the Iraqi border up to the Mediterranean," Erdogan told reporters after Friday prayers in Istanbul.

Britain-based monitor the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights had said that Russia had sent a number of engineers to the Syrian border town of Qamishli to strengthen the runway and increase the capacity of an airport there.

Russia's reported move into Qamishli comes as Ankara and Moscow are experiencing their biggest crisis in years over the shooting down of a Russian war plane by Turkey on November 24.

"We maintain our sensitivities on this issue," added Erdogan, citing reports that Russia had deployed some 200 soldiers and stating that he would raise the issue Saturday in talks with visiting US Vice President Joe Biden.

Observers have said that Russia, which has for years been at loggerheads with Turkey over the Syrian conflict, may want to refit the airport as a Russian base, as happened in Hmeimim in Latakia province.

Qamishli lies just south of the Turkish border town of Nusaybin.

"I can say that Turkey is closely watching every military movement on its borders and especially the border with Syria," the government source told AFP, asking not to be named.

- 'Prevent this formation' -

The Turkish army has already reinforced security by digging trenches in the border zone, the Hurriyet daily said.

It quoted Turkish security sources as saying that a Russian military delegation, headed by a general and including members of the Russian military intelligence service GRU, had flown into Qamishli on January 16 to inspect the airport.

The Kremlin and Iran are the chief remaining allies of President Bashar al-Assad who Turkey wants to see ousted as the key to ending Syria's almost five year civil war.

Turkey has repeatedly expressed alarm about Russia's deployment of troops to Syria which Moscow says is aimed at fighting jihadists but is widely seen as buttressing the Assad regime.

Education Minister Nabi Avci, speaking in parliament, claimed Russia's forces in Qamishli were working with both the regime as well as Kurdish militia of the Democratic Union Party (PYD).

The People's Protection Units (YPG) have established control over much over the northern Syrian border region in the past months after pushing out Islamic State (IS) jihadists.

But Ankara accuses the PYD and YPG of being the Syrian branch of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) and has been alarmed by an apparent tightening of ties between Moscow and the Kurds after the plane downing.

"For us, there is no difference between PYD, YPG, PKK or Daesh (IS)," said Erdogan.

"We will discuss this with Biden tomorrow... I hope that this joint stance will be aimed at preventing this wrong Russian formation in northern Syria," he added.

Hurriyet also claimed a delegation from Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB), the PYD and the Assad regime was now in Qamishli.

BEIRUT (Reuters) - A series of air raids killed scores of people over the past 24 hours in the provinces of Raqqa and Deir al-Zor in northern and eastern Syria, which are mostly controlled by Islamic State, a monitoring group said on Saturday.

The death toll in two towns near the city of Deir al-Zor reached 44, in strikes carried out by Russian or Syrian warplanes, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

In Raqqa city, Islamic State's de facto capital in Syria, at least 32 people had been killed, the group said.

Russian coalition liberates another Syrian town, allows foreign media in to document the success (VIDEO)

A group of foreign journalists got a chance to visit the recently liberated town of Salma in the Syrian province of Latakia. The Russian military showed the journalists the mountain resort city which was recently retaken from al-Nusra militants and other terrorist organizations.

The city once a thriving resort now lays in ruins with some areas still mined, but liberated from the stronghold of the terrorists. Thejournalists were able to witness the results of the Syrian army operation.

American, European, Chinese and Japanese reporters learned that they were going into newly liberated Salma, just a few minutes before arriving in the city - due to security reasons. All of them were given helmets and bulletproof vests, Vesti News reported.

It is noted that the representatives of the media could move freely through the streets of Salma, they were allowed to ask questions of anyone who they wished to interview.

The correspondents of the largest Chinese TV channel said that he was struck by the openness of the Russian military.

The Russian Defense Ministry also reported that it is not a one-off event — the coverage of the fight against terrorism will continue.

Last week it became known that, with the support of the Russian air force, the Syrian army was able to establish control over the city of Salma, after it had been in the hands of terrorists for the past four years.

During this time, Syrian government troops held positions on approaches to Salma. However, the offensive was made possible after air strikes, intelligence gathering, and a blockade.

The strategically important city was once a mountain resort, which is home to about 10, 000 people. It now lies in ruins, with some areas still mined.

Earlier a RT crew also toured the neighborhoods of Salma and saw that the army is moving towards Rabia district, where the main terrorist stronghold is situated. This area is also located in the immediate vicinity of the road to the Syrian-Turkish border.

In addition, this week the representatives of Russian and foreign media were able to go on board the anti-submarine ship Vice-Admiral Kulakov, which is on duty off the coast of Syria.

The guests were shown the armed ship, including anti-missile and anti-aircraft missile systems.

GONE! GERMANY CANNOT ACCOUNT FOR 600,000 MISSING MUSLIM MIGRANTS

Most alarmingly, however, it is entirely possible that they have moved on, disappearing into Germany, or indeed travelling to other European Union member states. Despite the cold weather, the number of Muslim migrants making it into Europe from the Middle East has shown little sign of slowing, and many countries are expect greater numbers to arrive this year.

THE GERMAN GOVERNMENT HAS ADMITTED IT cANNOT
ACCOUNT FOR 600,000 OF THE 1.1 MILLION MUSLIM MIGRANTS
WHO ARRIVED INTO THE COUNTRY LAST YEAR – RAISING
CONCERNS THAT THE MIGRANTS HAVE ABSCONDED INTO
GERMANY AND OTHER EUROPEAN UNION (EU) NATIONS.

EDITOR’S NOTE: DURING WWII, THE COUNTRY OF GERMANY WAS VIRTUALLY
DESTROYED BY THE ACTIONS OF ADOLF HITLER, RESULTING IN TENS OF
THOUSANDS OF DEAD GERMAN CORPSES LINING THE STREETS OF BERLIN
AFTER THE ALLIED INVASION. IN 2016, ANGELA MERKEL IS TRYING TO RECREATE
THAT SCENARIO WITH THE MUSLIM INVASION.

Delays in processing applications may account for some of those missing, it is reported, buts other may have moved on to different EU countries, the Interior Ministry has confessed. The 1.1 million migrants registered with the German state’s ‘EASY’ system, operated by the German Ministry For Migration and Refugees. It does little more than record an applicant’s arrival and their country of origin.

Once migrants have registered, officials assign them a place where they are to be cared for, and where they can then make a full application for asylum.

However, according to the Daily Mail, only 476,649 of the 1.1million migrants have so far turned up at their assigned destination and registered their asylum case there. That number breaks down as 326,529 men and 150,120 women.

THERE ARE THREE POSSIBLE EXPLANATIONS AS TO WHY
THE MISSING 600,000 MIGRANTS HAVE NOT YET APPEARED.

They might indeed have registered, but have not showed up due to delays in the system. Or, they might never have existed – migrants are known to register more than once to increase their chance of reaching their preferred destination. The second option here is less likely, as it would not account for the numbers known to have travelled to Europe over the past year.

German ire over Cologne assaults targets North Africans

AFP

Düsseldorf (Germany) (AFP) - Even 73-year-old retiree Edris says he has not been spared suspicious questions from Germans after a rash of sex assaults in Cologne blamed on North Africans.

"If there is a criminal Moroccan, it boomerangs back to all of us," said Edris, who moved to Germany from Morocco 47 years ago, adding that criminal Arabs are "pigs".

Germany's Maghreb community has come under a harsh spotlight after hundreds of women were groped and robbed by mainly North African suspects on New Year's Eve outside Cologne's main train station.

Only one suspect -- an Algerian asylum seeker -- has been arrested so far over the sex crimes and 25 Moroccans and Algerians count among the 30 suspects under investigation, police said.

"Over the last three weeks, the Maghreb community has been stigmatised like the enemy," Samy Charchira, a social worker in the western city of Duesseldorf, which is also home to the biggest number of Algerians and Moroccans in Germany.

"That has had serious consequences with people subject to verbal or physical attacks. It's very worrying," said Charchira, who is also a government advisor on issues relating to Islam.

Even before the full scale of the Cologne rampage emerged, Berlin had already been watching with concern at a sudden jump in the number of Moroccan and Algerian asylum seekers in December.

German authorities recorded 847 Algerian asylum seekers in June, but six months later, that figure reached 2,296.

For Moroccans, the number had jumped from 368 in June to 2,896.

The Cologne violence has only added impetus to the authorities' plans to bring down the numbers.

Chancellor Angela Merkel wants the North African countries to be added to a list of nations of "safe origin", meaning that their nationals would have little chance of winning asylum.

Berlin is also pressing Algiers and Rabat to take back their nationals who have failed to win asylum, so as to free up resources to deal with bona fide refugees among the nearly 1.1 million migrants who arrived in Germany in 2015.

- 'Known troublemakers' -

Social workers lament that many in Germany now regard Moroccans and Algerians as criminals in the wake of the Cologne melee, even though the majority are upstanding citizens who have lived and worked alongside other communities in peace in Germany for decades.

The first North African migrants arrived in the 1960s to keep Germany's factories running or to take on the dirty and tough job of coal mining.

Since the end of the 1980s, their profiles have changed, and many who have arrived are students.

Members of the North African community are quick to distance themselves from a handful of petty criminals who they say are sullying their reputation.

"We are unsettled," said Mohammed Aljannayi, who heads the Moroccan community association in the Cologne district of Kalk.

"Many women don't trust us anymore in this district because of these people, who have acted so unconscionably that I am at a loss for words," he told Stern magazine.

Charchira said that "in Duesseldorf, it's a group of 40 to 50 young men who are known" trouble-makers giving the community a bad name.

"Some are street kids in their home countries," he said, adding that "others came from Spain, Italy or France where they have resided illegally".

A 38-year-old hairdresser of Moroccan origin who declined to give his name said "these youth who have come to Germany have no future".

"Our district was normal but many things have changed now," said the man, who was born and bred in Duesseldorf.

"I don't go to certain areas because I am afraid of gangs there," he said, adding that the New Year's Eve chaos has "destroyed our reputation".
