I am afraid this thread is on the rise to becoming a Gallery of Horror...

Bushmeat Could Cause Next Pandemic (Video)

We now know that HIV, the virus which causes AIDS, likely originated in chimpanzees and we also know that it likely spread from forest origins deep in Cameroon and then to the Congo during a period of Imperial expansion by Belgium at the beginning of the 20th century.

According to an investigation by “Unreported World,” those forests are once again being tapped for meat with supply lines out to the rest of Cameroon and on to the rest of the world — creating fears that another deadly pathogen will make its way from great apes or monkeys to us.

“Bushmeat” is 80% of the meat eaten in the Central West African country and many thousands of tons are illegally exported around the world.

In January, screenings at JFK International Airport in New York found a number of viruses which can be transmitted to humans in smuggled packages of meat from various monkeys — and from chimpanzees.

In Cameroon, “Unreported World” found once inaccessible forests in the same regions thought to be the source of HIV now opened up by logging tracks. There are a tiny group of brave wardens for one forest reserve, armed with little more than knives and now with little funding.

One warden tells them:

The only guns we have are WW2 French rifles. The government keeps promising us new weapons but they never come. If we do catch armed poachers it can turn violent and it’s every man for himself and God for everyone.

Hunting of great apes is illegal in Cameroon, with a possible three year jail term, but not of other forest creatures.

Reporter Evan Williams met local Baka, also known as pygmies, who take orders several times a week. A chimpanzee will earn them €25-30 — a vast sum. But if this meat makes its way to markets in Paris or London, it fetches many hundreds of euros per kilogram.

See video here of his trip into the forest with a Baka hunter who explains how and why he kills gorilla.

He discovers that eating gorilla led to the deaths of an entire village from an unknown cause, possibly ebola, save for one women who didn’t eat the meat. Apes host ebola, anthrax, yellow fever and other potential viruses yet to be discovered as well as an immunodeficiency virus believed to be the source of our HIV. The retroviruses found in that sampling at JFK Airport were simian foamy virus, cytomegalovirus and lymphocryptovirus.

According to Professor Dominique Baudon at the Pasteur Centre, it is certain that within the next two decades the eating of bushmeat will lead to the appearance of a new viral pathogen like HIV or Ebola.

Babila Tafon, head vet at the primate sanctuary Ape Action Africa (AAA), in Mefou, just outside the capital Yaounde, has detected simian foamy virus transmission to humans who are bitten or who have direct blood contact. The risk is lower, says Tafon, for cooked or smoked meat, but not eliminated.

Rachel Hogan from AAA also tells Williams that the bushmeat trade is leading to an explosion in the numbers of orphaned great apes.

Hogan says they are often suffering from terrible wounds and trauma when they arrive.

They grieve just like humans. We have had them where they will just sit rocking, grinding their teeth and they don’t respond to anything. You have to be able to win back their trust.

If this continues there might not be any wild populations of gorillas left.

The Last Great Ape Organization (LAGA) says it is the world’s only enforcement NGO. It focuses on investigating major wildlife slaughter and trafficking and now has more than 450 successful prosecutions under its belt in Cameroon alone.

Corruption remains one of the biggest enemies and LAGA warns of a major regionalization and internationalization of the illegal meat and live-animal trafficking in endangered species.

Here’s the story of one baby gorilla, Nona, who was left for dead by poachers and nursed back to life at the Ape Action Africa sanctuary (Warning: disturbing images):

Abuse Caught On Video At Livestock Auction (Video)

Despite “ag-gag” laws that restrict undercover investigations, animal rights organizations are doing an outstanding job exposing acts of cruelty to farm animals. On a near weekly basis the public is learning about the atrocities and seeing that justice and change are steadily being accomplished in the industry. Mercy For Animals released hidden camera footage on Wednesday that recorded shocking abuse at one of the oldest and largest livestock auctions in Southern California.

The video which was filmed at Ontario Livestock Sales has led to 21 cruelty to animals charges against seven employees and the owner of the auction house. MFA explained the graphic footage shows “sheep, goats, pigs and other animals being kicked, beaten and stomped on, and sick or injured animals being neglected and left to slowly suffer and die without food, water or veterinary care.”

The group let Dr. Temple Grandin, the world’s leading expert on farmed animal welfare and advisor to the USDA and meat industry, look at the footage. She said, “The handling was very rough and kicking animals is not acceptable. If this auction had been a federally inspected meat packing plant, they would have suspended inspection and shut them down.”

Following the investigation MFA presented their findings to law enforcement authorities and the San Bernardino County District Attorney. As a result, seven employees and the owner of the auction house were charged. The case is ongoing.

“This case graphically illustrates the cruel, inhumane and illegal abuses that farmed animals are all too often subjected to in California,” said Nathan Runkle, executive director at Mercy For Animals. “In a civilized society, it is our moral obligation to protect all animals, including animals raised and killed for food, from needless suffering. We hope these charges send a strong message to livestock auctions that animal abuse will not be tolerated.”

The undercover video shows:

  • “downed” animals—those too sick or injured to even stand or walk on their own—being left to slowly suffer and die without food, water or veterinary care;
  • sick, injured and dying animals being kicked, pushed and dragged into transport trucks to be sold and slaughtered for human consumption;
  • workers throwing, beating, stomping on and kicking animals in the face and body;
  • baby goats being carelessly picked up by their necks and then kicked or tossed around;
  • workers grabbing, dragging and throwing animals by their heads, necks, ears, horns, tails, and legs; and
  • birds stuffed into bags and goats, sheep and other animals overcrowded into small pens, forcing animals to stand on and even trample each other.

A website shared by Free From Harm shows how Mark Middleton at Animal Visuals has developed an interactive map that tracks farm cruelty investigations and Ag Gag laws.

Killing Cats is the Wrong Prescription for Preventing Typhus

After a typhus case in April, the city of Santa Ana in California is trying to round up and kill feral cats to prevent the disease from spreading. That might make sense if feral cats spread typhus, but they don’t — fleas do, and they don’t need cats to do it.

In a press release, cat advocacy group Alley Cat Allies cites epidemiologist Deborah L. Ackerman for the fact that in the absence of cats, “fleas are versatile parasites and will simply find another host, as dogs, raccoons, opossums, mice and all mammals as well as birds are potential hosts for fleas.” Hmm, “all mammals”…by Santa Ana’s logic, the town should start trapping humans.

Alley Cat Allies asserts that typhus outbreaks “are rare,” and in at least one case spread through fleas that made their homes on dogs, not cats. The organization urged Santa Ana to follow the example of Los Angeles County, which “advises treating pets for fleas and using humane outdoor cat deterrents to control flea infestations. Instead of killing feral cats, who avoid people by nature,” Alley Cat Allies continued, Santa Ana should “provide community resources for residents to treat and protect their pets, whom they come in contact with every day.”

A report from the Associated Press posted by Silicon Valley’s MercuryNews.com confirmed Alley Cat Allies’ claims that Santa Ana would kill the cats it caught. The write-up stated that Santa Ana police were setting traps specifically for feral cats, and that they will likely “euthanize” the animals they catch “because infections run through colonies and adoption isn’t possible if they are wild and sick.”

KTLA.com Los Angeles reported that according to local officials, “once caught, the cats will be sedated and then euthanized,” apparently regardless of whether they have fleas, let alone typhus-bearing fleas.

The news station recommended the following steps to protect against typhus:

-Pets, yards, and homes should be kept free of fleas by treating pets with flea-prevention medication.

-Eliminate places where wild animals, such as opossums, cats, rats and raccoons, can find shelter.

-Eliminate food sources that might attract wild animals.

-Wear protective gear when cleaning areas that may be infested by the above-mentioned animals.

These tips are designed to distance people from infected fleas rather than catching animals who rarely if ever interact with humans and whose deaths will not eliminate fleas. They make much more sense and are more humane than Santa Ana’s attempt to kill a few feral cats.

Aside from being misguided, Santa Ana’s cat-catching program appears ineffective: there are no reports that the town has trapped a single cat.

Santa Ana’s strange choice of strategy should not minimize the threat typhus poses. Local residents, particularly those with young children, fear an outbreak, however unlikely it may be. Typhus can be fatal if it is not treated with antibiotics. Symptoms of the disease “include fever, headaches, chills, body aches and rashes on the chest, back, arms and legs,” MercuryNews.com reports.

Most media outlets report that there has been only one case of typhus in Santa Ana: a child who had to be hospitalized but was later released. One channel, however, NBC Los Angeles, reported that this was actually the second reported case of typhus in the area this year.

California's Smog Problem Putting Giant Sequoia Redwoods At Risk

Written by Jaymi Heimbuch

An icon of the California landscape is in danger. The biggest and oldest trees in California, the giant Sequoias, are at risk from air pollution coming in to the national park from the Central Valley where farming, food processing and major highways all contribute to smog pollution. The smog makes it hard for seedlings to become established, and is yellowing the needles of other types of pines, the Jeffrey and Ponderosa.

According to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the national park in which the redwoods live has the worst air quality of any national park. “Signs in visitor centers warn guests when it’s not safe to hike. The government employment website warns job applicants that the workplace is unhealthy. And park workers are briefed every year on the lung and heart damage the pollution can cause.”

If there is that much warning for the damage the air will cause to humans, just imagine the damage it is causing to the trees, as trees are considered the “lungs of the planet.” While it’s clear the impact the pollution has on young trees and other pines, it isn’t yet clear what impact it is having on the established trees that are thousands of years old.

According to AJC, the only way to improve air quality in the park is to improve air quality in the Central Valley, which at this point is a monumental — and very long-term — task. In the mean time, the future of the great Sequoias is shaky.

Fecal Bacteria May Be Hiding In Beach Sand

High profile disasters like the Gulf oil spill and realities like the Great Pacific Garbage Patch are reminders that while the ocean may look refreshing, it’d kind of like taking a dip in a slightly poisoned bathtub. Between industrial pollution and something scientists call “fecal indicator bacteria,” it’s no wonder popular beaches are often shut down because contamination levels put swimmers at risk.

In most cases, beach shut-downs come after a hard rain, which washes sewage and other contaminants into the shallow water, causing pathogen levels to spike. After a day or so, the levels return to “safe” levels, and authorities reopen the waterfront for public use.

You might think enjoying the ocean from the safety of your beach blanket will protect you from coming into contact with any nasty sewage-borne pathogens that might still be hanging around, but you’d be wrong.

Up until recently, beach monitoring programs only took samples from the water, because it was assumed that fecal bacteria couldn’t survive on land. But recent research shows that this assumption was incorrect. It turns out ”sands and sediments provide habitat where fecal bacteria may persist, and in some cases grow.”

This means that even though the fine, dry sands might seem completely devoid of life, it’s actually a breeding ground for bacteria that could make you very sick. This would also explain why high contamination levels are sometimes detected even when there’s been no rain.

Still, researchers are reluctant to say that monitoring programs should start to consider beach sand samples in their analysis. Graduate student Elizabeth Halliday and microbial ecologist Rebecca Gast, who published a 2011 study on this topic, say it’s not yet clear for how long fecal bacteria can remain alive in the sand.

“Put it this way: I go to the beach and walk on the beach all the time. I love the beach. But, I wouldn’t eat something that dropped on the sand,” Halliday said, noting that her research hasn’t scared her away from the beach, nor should it overly alarm the general public.
