Hi Martha;
========================================
I have a question. If it is important to have a white background for content why are your articles on blue on your website?
I know they always said to use white but I really can't stand white anymore.

LOL. That's a very good question. Like you, I got tired of white. The truth is that you don't "have to" use white. It's not the color itself that's the point, but the level of contrast.
You'll note that I have the text on pale blue, with medium blue as my left/right columns and an even darker blue as the page background. The contrast from darkest blue (background) to the lighter blue makes the text easier to read, and "frames" the content for the viewer so their eyes aren't taking in the whole page span, but zooming in on the content.
If I had the whole page in light blue, it would cause eye strain faster and people would not read as much.
I popped over to your site - the main portion color is good. lol. If it was me, I'd make the background color even darker for maximum contrast value. There's something about "high contrast" that just grabs people more than low contrast.
: )
