ISRAEL
The terms that apply to the territory of Israel's existence are varied. The name Canaan occurs in Mesopotamian, Egyptian, and Phoenician writings beginning around the fifteenth century B.C.E.
as well as in the Bible. It refers sometimes to an area encompassing
all of Palestine and Syria, and sometimes includes the entire land west
of the Jordan River. The term may derive from a Semitic word meaning
"reddish purple," referring either to the rich dye produced in the area
or to wool colored with the dye.
The name Palestine
refers to the area from the Mediterranean coast to the Jordan valley
and from the southern Negev to the Galilee lake region in the north.
The term derives from the Hebrew word peleshet, the land of the Philistines. After the second Jewish revolt (132-135 C.E.) the Romans adopted the name Palaestina
for this territory. The name Palestine was revived after World War I
and applied to this territory under the British Mandate. Today it has
been adopted as the name of the political entity of Arab people living
in this region.
The name Israel comes from Hebrew Bible usage, and refers both to geographical territory (erets yisrael,
the land of Israel) and the nation state that dwelled there. Its
biblical origin is the name God gave to Jacob after they wrestled; yisrael
means "strives with God" or "God strives." This land is also termed
"the Promised Land" in the belief that Israel's possession of the land
was a divine gift. Pilgrims and the devout also refer to it as "the
Holy Land," in recognition of its associations with biblical saints and
religious leaders.

The modern state of Israel has its roots in the Land of Israel (Eretz Yisrael), a concept central to Kudaism for over three thousand years. After WWI, the League of Nations approved the Brittish MAndate ofPalestine with the intent of creating a "national home for the Jewish people" In 1947, the Unatided Nations approved the partition of the Mandate of Palestine into two states, one Jewish and one Arab. The Arab League rejected the plan, but on May 14th 1948, the Jewish provisional government declared Isrrel's Independence. The new country's victory in the subsequent Arab-Isaeli War expanded the borders of the Jewish state beyond those in the UN Partition Plan. Since then, Israel has been in conflict with many of the neighbouring Arab countries
, resulting in several major wars and decades of violence that continue to this day. Since its foundation, Israel's boundaries and even the State's very right to exist have been subject to dispute,
especially among its Arab neighbors. However, Israel has signed peace
treaties with Egypt and Jordan, and efforts are being made to reach a permanent accord with the Palestinians.

Biblical times - Abraham, Isaac and Jacob
Jewish
history began about 4,000 years ago (c. 17th century BCE) with the
patriarchs - Abraham, his son Isaac, and grandson Jacob. Documents
unearthed in Mesopotamia, dating back to 2000-1500 BCE, corroborate
aspects of their nomadic way of life as described in the Bible. The
Book of Genesis relates how Abraham was summoned from Ur of the
Chaldeans to Canaan to bring about the formation of a people with
belief in the One God. When a famine spread through Canaan, Jacob
(Israel), his 12 sons, and their families settled in Egypt, where their
descendants were reduced to slavery and pressed into forced labor.

Israel is a representative democray with a parliamentary system and universal suffrage. The Prime Minister serves as head of government and the Knesset serves as Israel's legislative body. In terms of nominal gross domestic product, the nation's economy is estimated as being the 44th-largest in the world. Israel ranks high among Middle East countries on the bases of human development, freedomof the press, and economic competitiveness. Jerusalem is the country's capital, seat of government, and largest city, while Israel's main financial center is Tel Aviv.

Exodus and Settlement
After
400 years of bondage, the Israelites were led to freedom by Moses who,
according to the biblical narrative, was chosen by God to take his
people out of Egypt and back to the Land of Israel promised to their
forefathers (c.13th-12th centuries BCE). They wandered for 40 years in
the Sinai desert, where they were forged into a nation and received the
Torah (Pentateuch), which included the Ten Commandments, and gave form
and content to their monotheistic faith.
City of David
The city of Jerusalem was originally
built around the Gihon Spring, on the southeastern hill to the left of the Temple Mount, which is today crowned with the gold-domed
Dome of the Rock. Jerusalem has been continuously inhabited since
at least 3000 B.C., but it was only in the time of Solomon that the
city limits expanded beyond the southeastern spur, known today as the
"City of David."
Jerusalem is the ceontre of the World. This City is holy to the 3
main faiths of the Abrahamic religion. It will be a place of war in
future.

In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, the earth
was a formless void
and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God swept
over the face of the waters. Then God said, "Let there be light;" and
there was light. And God saw that the light
was good; and God separated the light from the darkness. God called the
light Day, and the
darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning,
the first day. ETC, ETC.
Jerusalem is the centre of the World. This City is holy to the 3
main faiths of the Abrahamic religion. It will be a place of war in
future. As Christ returns Jerualem will be replaced with a New
Jerusalem.
