Combining the sacred and the profane: two extraordinary portraits in this post.

Francisco de Goya - St Gregory (oil on canvas, 1797)

Francisco de Goya - Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos
(oil on canvas, 1798)

Three more extraordinary portraits in only one year! As usual, Goya has not favored his sitters, particularly the first two, with whom the realist approach has prevailed over any other consideration - save for the artistic one. And yet, the outcome could not be better for all three paintings.

Francisco de Goya - Portrait of Ascensio Juliá
(oil on canvas, c.1798)

Francisco de Goya - Portrait of Andrés del Peral
(oil on panel, 1798)

Francisco de Goya - Ferdinand Guillemardet
(oil on canvas, 1798)

Back in 1788, Goya had painted this interesting portrait of St Francis Borja trying to save the soul of an agonizing man in his deathbed. In effect, he, Goya, who seems to have been long fascinated for this struggle between good and evil in a soul, most probably experienced it himself, and so it is only natural that such struggle should be represented in his artwork.

Then, about ten years later, Goya painted this other work inspired in a similar theme - one which had apparently become increasingly important for him, as attested by the fact that he touched it frequently mainly in his drawings and prints.
