RE: GREAT MASTERS OF PAINTING - WILLIAM TURNER

The three early masterpieces below also belong to the 'placid' category in Turner works where water is the protagonist. The third was posted, in smaller size, by Roger Macdivitt on page 3 of this thread. In his words: 'quite extraordinary'.

William Turner - The Festival Upon the Opening of the Vintage at Macon
(oil on canvas, 1803)

William Turner - Windsor Castle from the Thames
(oil on canvas, c. 1804 - 1806)

William Turner - Sun Rising Through Vapour; Fishermen Cleaning and Selling Fish
(oil on canvas, 1807)

And here I may call it a day with this gem of a painting of a calm sea which, if you remember, adorns the opening page of this thread - only this time I am posting it pretty more enlarged.

William Turner - Scarborough Town and Castle: Morning: Boys Catching Crabs
(watercolor on paper, 1811)

Here is the engraving by T. Lupton (published 1825).

After William Turner - Sunrise. Whiting Fishing at Margate
(mezzotint on paper, 1825)

Thank you Miguel, for this.

We often forget the wonderful skill involved in producing an engraving like this. Just note the beauty of the water and its variations in texture.

Yes Roger, I vividly remember my viewing engravings as a child at an uncle's home. They were not as good as the Lupton's one for sure, but I was so marveled at them. Some of them were hanging in the walls, but many more were kept in folders. I revered them and would treat them accordingly.

So many good things from the past are no longer to be seen. Such a pity.

If you are familiar with Turner's life and works, you will know he was so good with watercolor from a very early age that at first it is often
difficult to tell a watercolor from an oil painting in his works - at least from a photograph. Here are two pretty exquisite early paintings by him - one of them a watercolor, the other an oil on canvas.

William Turner - Pembroke Castle, South Wales: Thunder Storm Approaching
(watercolor on paper, 1801)

William Turner - Ploughing Up Turnips, Near Slough
(oil on canvas, 1809)
