Salvador Dali - Portrait of Paul Elouard (oil on cardboard, 1929)

This is a strange painting.

Paul Elouard was a founder of the surrealist movement and his wife finally left him to live with Dali with whom she stayed for the rest of her life. All of the small faces in this painting no doubt have a special tie to Elouard. I am at a loss to understand Dalis symbolism here but I love the composition and as always, the execution.

The background of sky is typical of that which so frequently supports Dali's later paintings

Salvador Dali - Portrait of a Woman (unfinished) (oil on panel, two components, 1926)

This is interesting, being slightly cubist and has some Picasso feel about it. It doesn't suffer from it's unfinished state but does demonstrate Dali's need to experiment.

Hi Miguel and Roger,

This one has really got me wondering. Wow some of his paintings are something else. Thought Provoking is for sure. Especially this one. No feet, no hands, and head is too big for the body. What are all those other things? It looks like he was having a nightmare. Do you think!

Myrna,

Dali claimed to have dreamed many of his images. He sometimes wanted to shock or make people guress. He had a strange mind, was very vain and loved personal attention.

From these things he had a lot of choices.

However, his ability to paint just what he wanted was evident.
