Re: It Is Not Christmas (Nick)

Merri HoLLyDaZe Nick and everyone...

This is a beautiful time of the year whether or not you are celebrating the holiday as Christian or Hannucah as Jew... and then there'll be Kwanza and there's probably others we're not aware of?

But I need to make a little comment... I was raised by an atheist and an agnostic. We had beautiful secular Christmas with FAMILY and FRIENDS and even though the emphasis wasn't religious it was joyous and loving... Now growing up then, there were still school prayers in Illinois (very early 50s) ... the reason that was stopped was not because anyone was against praying... but who should lead the prayer? a Catholic or Protestant or Jew? and whose prayer should be spoken outloud to CHILDREN being raised in a multi-faith social situation....Catholics and Protestants (or which sort of Protestant!) back then weren't too keen on the others' prayers being the ones used with their children !!! (...and that's the truth! )

So... I was one of those kids that had the good fortune of being able to follow the discussion and understandings of faith, belief, non-belief of GOOD PEOPLE while being on the outside... not a Jew, not a Catholic, not a Protestant...

I raised my daughters with choice of belief... They were given books including Bibles and a lovely blue covered  book that I gave them that had prayers in it from all around the world...

One daughter is new-age yoga teacher... the other became a Jehovah's Witness and is raising her children in that belief system. This poses a problem for this family. Whenever anything at the public school has a predominantly Christmas, Halloween, and other themes that the Jehovah Witness's don't recognize or choose to participate in due to their beliefs... the children have to be pulled out of school for part or all of the day.

Even in the middly of daily assignments, questions arise that necessitate my grandchildren to have to call home to ask their MOTHER if this is something that they should be doing ...

As disappointed as I was when I couldn't have xmas with most of my family...my first born grandson and first born grandaughter and the next two that make all FOUR of them!  and it was a shock. I learned a valuable lesson.

I'm not as tolerant as I thought I was... at least then I wasn't... Now I'm seeing happy, loving, bible reading and understanding children growing up looking inside of a culture not unlike I did as a child...

for you see, my biological mother had died when I was a small small child but the one thing I truly knew of her was that she was a loving and gracious Christian woman... (i didn't inherit the graciousness gene) and so at the age of 8 ((like my grandkids)) I read the bible and studied and looked inside a culture that is different from what most see it to be...

Imagine you are a Muslim child or Jehovah Witness' child or Orthodox Jew' child ... and think how they're experiencing the world around them...

Was I raised in a Christian Nation? I believe I was... but We do not live in a CHRISTIAN NATION ... We LIVE in a FREE NATION ..... that is what the founding father's intended.... Freedom of Religion was for all religions and in the United States there is more than one kind of celebration for Christmas or Xmas or the wonderful celebrations that Pagans have or... Hannukah or Kwanza or ????

or for those who for very valid and heart felt reasons don't celebrate this time of year! (smiles)

Beth

Beth,

Quite an interesting account there.

Christmas isnt Christmas if we missed out the real reason why God came. The news of Jesus' birth evoked a mixed reaction back then and it is still true today.

The wise men were filled with joyed and welcome and worshipped Him.(Mat 2:10-11) But King Herod felt threaten and tried to kill the baby Jesus( v.3-4,16)

It's just mind bloggling to think the Creator would emptied Himself, left His Glory and riches above to come down to earth and died (at the hands of His creation at that) in order to redeem men back to Himself.!  Just too hard to grasp or fathom!

Let us rediscover the true meaning of  Christmas.

Below is a lovely story about Santa explaining the symbols of Christmas. This is a good story for a Christmas assembly.

Teach the Children

I just finished the household chores for the night and was preparing to go to bed, when I heard a noise in the front of the house. I opened the door to the front room and to my surprise, Santa himself stepped out from behind the Christmas tree. He placed his finger over his mouth so I would not cry out.

"What are you doing?" I started to ask. The words choked up in my throat, and I saw he had tears in his eyes. His usual jolly manner was gone. Gone was the eager, boisterous character we all know.

He then answered me with a simple statement.

 "TEACH THE CHILDREN!"

I was puzzled; what did he mean? He guessed my question, and with one quick movement pulled a miniature toy bag from behind the tree.

As I stood puzzled, Santa said,
"Teach the children! Teach them the old meaning of Christmas. The meaning that now-a-days Christmas has forgotten."

Santa then reached in his bag and pulled out a FIR TREE and placed it in front of the fire place.
"Teach the children that the pure green colour of the stately fir tree remains green all year round, representing the everlasting hope of mankind, all the needles point heavenward, making it a symbol of man's thoughts turning toward heaven."

He again reached into his bag and pulled out a brilliant STAR.

"Teach the children that the star was the heavenly sign of promises long ago. God promised a Saviour for the world, and the star was the sign of fulfillment of His promise."

He then reached into his bag and pulled out a CANDLE.

"Teach the children that the candle symbolises that Christ is the light of the world, and when we see this great light we are reminded of Jesus who fills our lives with light."

Once again he reached into his bag and removed a WREATH and placed it on the tree.

"Teach the children that the wreath symbolises the real nature of love. Real love never ceases, like Gods love which has no beginning or end."

He then pulled from his bag an ornament of HIMSELF.

"Teach the children that I, Santa Clause symbolise the generosity and kindness we feel during the month of December."

He then brought out a HOLLY LEAF.

"Teach the children that the holly plant represents immortality. It represents the crown of thorns worn by our Saviour. The red holly represents the blood shed by Him."

Next he pulled from his bag a GIFT

and said,
"Teach the children that God so loved the world that HE gave us HIS only SON... We thank God for his very special gift."

"Teach the children that the wise men bowed before the Holy Baby and gave HIM gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. We should always give gifts in the same spirit of the wise men."

Santa then reached in his bag and pulled out a SUGAR CANE and hung it on the tree.

"Teach the children that the sugar cane represents the shepherd's crook. The crook on the staff helps to bring back lost sheep to the flock."

He reached in again and pulled out an ANGEL.

"Teach the children that it was the angels that announced the glorious news of the Saviour's birth. The angels sang 'Glory to God in the highest, on earth peace and good will toward men."

Suddenly, I heard a soft tinkling sound, and from his bag he pulled out a BELL.

"Teach the children that as the lost sheep are found by the sound of the bell, it should ring to guide us to God. The bell symbolises guidance and return. It reminds us that we are all precious in the eyes of God."

Santa looked back and was pleased. I saw the twinkle in his eyes as he said:

"Remember, teach the children the true meaning of Christmas and do not put me in the centre, for I am but an humble servant of the One that is, and I bow down to worship HIM, our LORD, our GOD."

I love Santa Claus myself and Nativity Scenes and Chritmas Cards and There' not place like home for the holidays.... All the Christmas Songs especially if played and sung by a Jazz band and singer! Jazz and Christmas and Egg Nog! Yes!

My grandson George has a 'wooden toy' here at my house that is a nutcracker for the Holidays and only for setting out on the table... He named it Michael and they probably won't get to hear or see the Nutcracker Suite until they are adults...

I want to wish all my Religious friends here at Adlandpro a blessed Holy Season and Celebration of the birth of Christ no matter when it actually may have occurred historically! (just teasing!)

There is nothing more magical than a child wondering if those little figures in a Nativitly Scene under a Christmas tree could really be about a true story and how did those wise men know how to follow the stars? And that it all had to do with love....

Beth

Hello My Brother Peter !

I posted this because I am getting fed up that our country is a majority of immigrants such as I who have been living in this country all our lives celebrating Christmas and Thanks giving and now it is not OK to have a tree in the court rooms because it offends certain cultures. Try the same thing in Germany or Japan. We do not try to change other peoples beliefs but it seems because we are more like sheep than wolves we are being walked on and it does not feel good !
