Hi Kathy,
Stopping the horrible nightmares is something that could be approached from many angles. It's all very well to give advice, even if genuinely given. I can give some but is it right? All I know is what has worked for others. Using yesterdays experiences to make a new future only works if we live for NOW.
Take the example of somebody who is told to go and pray about it.
That person may go away into a corner with no real belief just a desparation. They may say all the right words and the expect a result, and might get one, or might not. They concentrate their salvation upon tomorrow and hope. But as many of us know, although I believe that God answers our prayers, His answers are not always clear or what we want. God's plan may be different to ours. We often remain where we were, looking for the answer.
The best thing that your friend can do is give no importance to the reason or content of those nightmares. It is what we do today that counts. Yesterday merely gives us the reason for our present position, the answer is not in yesterday but in today. Hope springs eternal but hope must be for now.
Believe, feel and think about a future which contains none of yesterdays pain. Don't search for cures to yesterdays ills but look for todays life-giving solution. What you do today determines whether you move on or stay in the past.
If you fell in a vat of indelible dye all the scrubbing in the world would not remove it BUT decide today that you can't remove the effects but you can ignore them, you will find one day that the last trace has gone and you've moved on.
This CAN BE DONE. There are various routes, but it CAN be done.
