We find this image acceptable, because we are aware of the story of E.T.

Yet we would be terrified if we saw a creature like this walking toward us!

This youmg man is one of our own and yet we still turn away in disgust

 

Big question is, why did we tell aliens where we live if we cannot even except the looks of those who were born disfigured here on Earth?

Nick, Thank you for the reminder. Recently, I read a thread in Adlandpro in which the person used a not so kind word describing a disfigured human being. The person had in his signature line a url for a children's camp for disabled children. I called him on his contradiction. Thank you for helping us to see our attitudes need an slight adjustment.

You hit a sensitvie nerve with me, as tis is so true.  My youngest grandchild, Griffin, was born 4 years ago with a severe double cleft pallette.  He looked - at birth - much like the picture of the young man you are showing here. 

God has blessed Griffin with many miracles, and today he no longer looks as he did at birth.  However, before his operations to correct his deformity began, there were many times, that i owuld have him out in public where the human reaction to his appearance was less than humane!  Acceptance came easy to those of us who loved and cared for him, but could not be obtained by those who did not know the situation.  I am now a strong supporter of "Smile Train" an organization that helps the children in the third world and poorer countries.

Your post here throws out an extremely important message.  I hope it reaches even one who might be changed by it.

Hello Nick This is an interesting topic and one which deserves our attention. There are people all around us who are different from the norm and I believe that it is human nature to be curious. When one stares at another who is different than themselves, I really don't think there is any ill intentions meant. I know that from a personal viewpoint, I have found myself looking a little more closely at some who look " different" and I do this with mixed emotions. My first emotion though, is one of wanting to reach out to this person. I want to know more about them and if it is needed, I would like to help them in some way. I think that a lot of the curiosity comes from just knowing that that person is experiencing life from a very different perspective than I am and I really want to know more about their experience. I have in fact, found myself drawn to those with disabilities and deformities and many times have made it a point to get to know this person. Invariably, I have found that they did indeed have a lesson in life to share with me or anyone else who wants to understand life from their perspective. These people who are so different from us can truly teach us a lot and I have found them to be very anxious to share their lives with others. So, I would suggest that the next time any of you find yourself " starring at someone different ", don't stop there. Go up to this person and introduce yourself and show them that it is more about curiosity than about any ill feelings or disgust. I guarantee that you will walk away with a deeper sense of gratitude for what you have in life. A lesson in life that will last a lifetime. May a smile follow you to sleep each night,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, and be there waiting,,, when you awaken.
