The Lotus and the Crane
12/19/2006 8:25:44 PM

The Crane and the Lotus

I shed a tear when I saw
The discarded bottles and paper
Littering the pristine lake
The water no longer clear but dark.

I stopped as if in tribute
Remembering the way it was so beautiful
Sometimes like glass pure and clear
I could see to the bottom.

Weeks went by and nothing changed
Still the dark littered lake
But one day a bud of a flower
Amazingly appeared in the dingy waste.

The bud opened its petals
And I thought it odd
The pure white petals
Adorning the blackness.

Then a crane pure and white
Stepped precariously along
Not a spot on its pure white body
In spite of where it was.

My soul is like that I thought
Moving among the mire of the world
But not tarnished by the hate
Umblemished by the coruption.

It was not always this way
I took on every flaw
Despite its damage to my spirit
I became as black as this lake.

But the Angels planted in my heart
A small seed of a beautiful flower
One day it bloomed in full glory
And I knew unconditional love.
