Here's the recipe for making the lovely cookies with which Nick so thoughtfully posted pictorialy. Cut out cookies are lovely, add variety to the plate with color and shape They taste so good with milk or hot chocolate. Sugar Cookies Mix together: 1/2 c. soft shortening (half butter) 3/4 c. sugar 1 egg Stir in: t tbsp. milk or cream 1 tsp. flavoring (vanilla, lemon or of your choosing) Add add and stir in: 1 1/4 c. flour 1/14 tsp. baking powder 1/4 tsp. salt Chill dough. Roll very thin 1/16" on floured surface. Cut into desiredshapes. Place on lightly greased baking sheet, and sprinkle with sugar. Bake til lightly browned. Bake 425 degrees, 5-7 min. makes about 5 doz. 2 1/2" cookies. Special notes: Sprinkle flour on the rolling pin. Roll a small amount at a time, keeping the remainder chilled. Cut as many cookies as possible from each rolling. Dip cookies cutter in flour, shake it, then cut. You could cut two sizes, laying smaller on the top and bake as one cookie. Hearts or bells would be nice like that. Frost with icing. You could put on sprinkles before baking or add the sprinkles to the frosting. Use two size circular cutters (jelly jars will do) to make a wreath. Roll small pieces of dough in little cirlces for the berries. You can also make small strands of dough to braid for wreaths. candy canes or logs.

CHRISTMAS WREATHS

I was first introduced to this little cookie treat in the 60's.  The wreaths add a special touch to a cookie platter with color and texture.  The green and red fit the idea of adding variety to your cookie plate.  I use enough green coloring to make them a dark green.

Ingredients:

30 marshmellows

1/2 c.butter or margarine

1 tsp. vanilla

green food coloring

4 c. crushed corn flakes

cinnamon redhot candies

Melt marshmellows and butter/margarine.  Add 1 teaspoon vanilla, green

food coloring and corn flakes.  Stir, further crushing corn flakes if need be.

Pile onto waxed paper.  Using  the back and point of a spoon force each

mound into a circle and push the center outward forming a wreath of about 2 inches.  Add (holly berries) cinnamon candies.

Hello Mary,

This is different. The meringue is in the pie! Very rich-a once a year treat!

White Christmas Pie

Dissolve 1 packet unflavored gelatin in ¼ cup cold water, set aside.

Cook the following 4 ingredients to a boil and boil 1 minute only:

½ cup sugar

4 tbsp. flour

Pinch of salt

1½ cups milk

Then remove from heat and cool. Stir in gelatin. Beat with mixer or

hand beater until well creamed. It will be fluffy.

Add ½ tsp. white vanilla* and ½ tsp. almond extracts.

Whip ½ cup whipping cream, fold into mixture.
Make a meringue of 3 egg whites, ¼ tsp. cream of tartar and fold

into mixture.
Add 1 cup flaked coconut.

Pour into a 9-inch baked pie shell.

*I have used just regular vanilla extract, but it doesn’t turn out as

white

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!
Mary
