This quote is so very true to my own personal view of how I try to conduct myself that I can't believe that I had never heard it before.

It's great to be liked, it strokes the ego, however, if I must compromise my beliefs and principles, I wouldn't be able to like myself.

If you want others to respect you, first you must respect yourself.  This can never be achieved by compromising your values just so someone will like you.
