You always start the most interesting discussions.  Looks like I'm running behind in reading this one. 

Anyway, I do think that what we are really selling - if we are selling anything - is ourselves.

I am always grateful when people contact me to say they appreciate something I sent ot them.

I believe it makes a difference to people - subscribers - to know that I am offering something of value to them, without any obligation... and then when I do have something they may want to purchase they are much more open to receive the information.
