Hi Mary, They have always been cake in Australia,banana cakes are very popular,what else can you do with black banana's.As far as slang we follow the English when we say "that takes the cake". Hi Leanne, Thanks for stopping in. By black banana, I assume you mean over ripe. It is amazing that the cake takes best with an almost rotten banana. That is a true example of the similarity between bread and cake. It can be banana bread if baked in a bread loaf pan but it is a cake if baked in a cake pan. All tastes the same.
