Hi Dave!
I don't mind autoresponder messages when I know that I signed up to receive them.
One thing I've learned in using autoresponders myself is, that if the person signing up doesn't give their first name, it usually defaults to Friend, or email address. If there is no default set up, then you get the code for [FIRSTNAME] in its place. And, sometimes autoresponders mess up and don't add the name.
I use autoresponders a lot. Before I switched to publishing my ezines through rss feeds, I used them even more than I do now.
I do understand how you feel though, when it comes to getting emails from people you don't know, autoresponders you didn't sign up to. It is frustrating to be thought of as merely a mark. Heck, even the IRS uses your name on correspondence. LOL
What I cannot stand is getting advertisements disguised as personal correspondence, or an invitation to be friends. (A topic in one of my own forums.) It drives me nuts!
I'd rather get this information in a friendly letter form, something like:
Hey Trina,
You know, I was looking at your profile, and I see that we have some common interests. I am part of this program, and thought you might be interested in it too.
That is personable, and doesn't leave me feeling like a mark.
Share your stuff with me, but don't send me ads, unless I sign up to your autoresponder to get your ads.
My two cents...
Trina
