These two portraits of the same young person, quite probably a gypsy girl, evidence in their many qualities the top professional maturity Bouguereau had reached by the time he painted them - not to mention the exquisitely accomplished backgrounds that add a sort of magical atmosphere to each.
William Bouguereau -
The Water Girl
(also known as
Girl Going to the Spring
)
(oil on canvas, 1885)
William Bouguereau -

Right you are Sozian.
The dirt mounds on the side of the Water girl look like you could dig a hole in them and plant something!

If you were offered in property one, only one, of these three portraits of peasant girls by Bouguereau, which would you choose? I would be at a loss myself,
so beautiful
they all are. I would probably choose the one at the bottom, which happens to be the best known of all three. And yet...
William Bouguereau -
The Knitter
(oil on canvas, 1886)
William Bouguereau -
Petite bergere
(
'Little Shepherdess'
)
(oil on canvas, 1889)
William Bouguereau -
Pastourelle
('The Little Shepherdess')
